Bucs Drop Series Finale with Hornets on Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern dropped their series finale with Delaware State on Sunday afternoon by an 8-3 final score. This marks the Bucs first loss of the year and put them at 2-1 on the year.
 
Matt Gallant was turned to for the start today and after a slow start, began to roll in his first collegiate appearance. He allowed a run in the first and third innings but struck out nine batters over his 4.1 innings of work. Zac Robinson came on in relief and gave up a pair of runs in the 5th and the team gave up another in the 7th.
 
The Buccaneers offense finally started to find their groove in the bottom half of that inning. Charleston Southern was able to score three runs during it with a Cade Conway single up the middle providing a pair of runs for the team. Aidan McAskie had a sacrifice hit to plate the third and cut their deficit to 8-3 with two innings left.
 
The team was able to get runners on again in the 8th but were unable to bring any of them home. Dylan Matsuoka came on in relief with a runner on in the top of the ninth and allowed three runs. The Hornets took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth and retired the Bucs to get the win.
 
Both squads left eight runners on base during the game. Charleston Southern had three hits on the day with Conway providing a pair of them and Lucas Pringle adding the third.
 
Gallant finished the day with 4.1 innings of work allowing four hits and four walks, allowing three runs and just two earned, picking up the loss. He struck out nine batters, the most by a CSU player this weekend in an appearance. Zac Robinson went 2.2 and saw two runners score, just one earned. Timpanelli threw 1.1 and Matsouka had 0.2.
 
Charleston Southern will be in action on Tuesday, February 20 for their first midweek game of the season. They will take on The Citadel for the first of four-games throughout the season with the Bulldogs. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. with the game going to be broadcast live on ESPN+.
