HOMEWOOD, ALA. – Charleston Southern dropped both of their games in a doubleheader at Samford, the preseason Southern Conference favorites, on Saturday.
GAME ONE
In game one, the Bulldogs took it by a 7-2 final score, playing just seven innings in the contest. Samford jumped on top early, putting up a five-spot in the first inning.
The Bucs did their damage in the fourth with hits by
Christian Bauman and
Alex Urlaub each scoring a runner to bring the team's deficit to 5-2.
Samford added one in the fourth and fifth innings each to push it to the final score of 7-2 for the afternoon.
Chandler Tuupo,
Dakota Miller, Bauman and Urlaub each had a hit in the game.
Evan Truitt got the start going five innings allowing all seven runs to score with five being earned. He struck out three batters.
Christian Robb threw the 6
th inning, getting all outs in his scoreless inning of work by strikeout.
GAME TWO
The Buccaneers got off to a better start in the backend of the doubleheader but fell by a 12-3 final. Samford scored a run in the bottom of the first off an error, but Charleston Southern immediately responded as
Alex Urlaub hit a two-run homer to center field to flip the score to 2-1 in the second.
After that, Samford started to get rolling, tying the game in the bottom half of the inning on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs then took the lead in the third, scoring four and tacking on another two in the fourth.
Peter Werth scored CSU's third run of the day off a solo home run to left field in the sixth. Samford tacked on more in their halves of the 6
th and 7
th innings.
The Buccaneers were able to get the bats going more in the second game with
BJ Banyon and Werth each having two hits in the game. Tuupo, Urlaub and
John Emendorfer had one apiece.

Charleston Southern will finish off the weekend series with Samford tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. CST first pitch.
