FARMVILLE, VA – Charleston Southern (13-17, 5-2 Big South) scored six in the top of the ninth to regain the lead and take the series opener at Longwood (13-17, 2-5 Big South) on Friday night by a final score of 12-8. The victory marks the 100
th win of Head Coach
Marc MacMillan's career.
"Friday night in college baseball is supposed to be tough," said MacMillan. "I thought that both teams displayed their competitive-spirit with their respetcive responses made when down, and our players 'staying in the fight' for all twenty-seven outs was impressive. There were some big pitches and outstanding plays made, and I really liked the response from four of our players who did not start the game in Bauman, Pringle, Low and Bogdanchik. Each of them had an impact on our team's successful outcome tonight."
Cade Conway led the game off by drawing a walk, moved to second when
Alex Urlaub got hit by a pitch, and came around to score on a bad pickoff attempt that went into the outfield. It did not last for long as a Bucs' failed pickoff attempt let the Lancers score to tie it back up in the bottom half of the inning.
In the second, Charleston Southern loaded the bases with
Peter Werth drawing a walk, Evan Long getting hit by a pitch and
Cade Conway getting walked.
Alex Urlaub sent a double down the left field line that cleared the bases and put Bucs back ahead, now leading 4-1. Urlaub scored during the next at bat as
Chandler Tuupo drew a walk and on a throwing error by the Lancers' catcher, Urlaub came around to score to pull ahead 5-1. Longwood got a run back in the second to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Buccaneers got another on the board in the top of the sixth as Christian Buaman started the inning with a double and was brought home on a hit by Werth to put them up 6-2. After this however, the hosts not only chipped into their deficit, but took the lead.
Longwood was able to score three runs in a pair of late innings to get ahead for the first time in the game. They scored the first flurry in the 6
th and then had the next one in the 8
th to put the pressure on the Bucs.
Heading into the 9
th, the Bucs had three outs to get back ahead and ended up tallying six runs, doubling their total that they had after the first eight innings. Bauman and Werth each had singles to start the frame and
Sam Low drew a walk to load the bases with no outs on the board.
At this point, Longwood turned to the bullpen as they still held a two-run lead.
Lucas Pringle was the first batter the new pitcher faced, and he hit him, allowing the first run to score.
Gavin Bogdanchik was next, coming in as a pinch hitter, and he sent a bunt to the right of the pitcher which he was unable to field, scoring a run and moving everyone up a bag. Conway was hit next, giving CSU another run and the lead as well at 9-8. Pringle scored on a passed ball and Tuupo sent two RBI single to center field, putting the Bucs ahead at 12-8.
Evan Truitt came back out for the 9
th and retired the Lancers in order, sealing the comeback victory.
Nick Timpanelli had the start, throwing a career-high 4.1 innings giving up just one walk and no earned runs. Truitt was the only other pitcher used and went for the other 4.2 innings, allowing six earned runs to score.
Bauman and Werth led the team with two hits each while Urlaub and Tuupo each had one. In total, the Bucs drew 13 walks with Conway leading the team with three. Tuupo, Werth and Pringle each had two.
The teams return for game two of the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Buddy Bolding Stadium.
