Lancers Avoid Getting Swept by Bucs with Comeback Victory on Sunday

Longwood defeated Charleston Southern on Sunday by a final score of 12-5. The victory gives the Lancers their first victory of the weekend series, avoiding the sweep

"Today's outcome hurts," said Head Coach Marc MacMillan. "We showed up expecting to win, and the end result was not due to overconfidence nor a lack of effort. This group of BUCS will play hard. As a staff and team, we all understand what we did to put ourselves in the position we were in - all day. Leaving Farmville winning two out of three is nothing to hang our heads about and an opportunity to learn and be better next time."

In a back-and-forth affair between the two squads the Longwood offense broke loose in the 8th inning scoring eight runs. Heading into the frame, the score was knotted up at 4 apiece.

In the 9th, Charleston Southern scored one run and put runners on to keep the pressure up but were unable to overcome the deficit.

The Buccaneers were led by Chandler Tuupo offensively who had a pair of solo home runs to give the Bucs the lead each time early in the game. This continued to highlight the stellar offensive season from the sophomore first baseman. Dakota Miller also had a tremendous day at the plate going 4-5. Gavin Bogdanchik and Cade Conway added two hits apiece

On the mound for the box was Sam Massey who started the game and threw the 1st first innings. Dillon Matsuoka was the first out of the bullpen for Charleston Southern and he threw the next four innings and was credited for the loss. The team also used Lee Watson and Zac Robinson in the game.

Charleston Southern now sits in a tie for third in the league standings at 6-3. They have won each of their weekend series in Big South action. They have knocked off High Point at Nielsen Field and UNC Asheville on the road in the other weekends. The Bucs are back in action on Tuesday, April 9th for a crosstown rivalry game with College of Charleston. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with the action live on ESPN+.
