CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern took the series opener over Radford on Friday night by a final score of 6-0 to move to 10-9 in Big South action. The shutout marks the first time that the Buccaneers have blanked an opponent in over a year with the last time being against Longwood on April 22, 2023.
"We fought today," said Head Coach
Marc MacMillan. "Massey had traffic pretty much every inning but made the pitches when he needed to get the ground ball. And, defensively, it was one of our best games as we made plays. I thought Banyon, Low and Kuehler ignited the offense while Truitt was efficient in keeping their offense in check."
Charleston Southern saw terrific pitching performances from
Sam Massey and
Evan Truitt as they were the lone two pitchers used during the game. Massey had the start, picked up the win, and threw the first five innings of the contest. He allowed just four hits and two walks. Truitt came out of the bullpen, collecting the save, and threw the final four frames and gave up just two hits and a walk.
The Buccaneers were able to jump on top early as they scored their first in the bottom of the second inning.
Sam Low had a sacrifice fly that scored the runner on third to get ahead 1-0. The Bucs then tallied a pair in the 5th inning with the first being off a home run by
Brock Kuehler, his first of the season.
Chandler Tuupo later had a single in the inning to score
BJ Banyon.
In the sixth, Charleston Southern loaded the bases with an out on the board. Banyon laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Buaman, who was on third, as well as
Sam Low who came all the way around to score from second. The final run came when
Dakota Miller scored from third on a passed ball in the 7th, scratching the 6th and final run of the day for the Buccaneers.
Charleston Southern returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they will look to lock up the series in game two against Radford. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. against the Highlanders with
Nick Timpanelli for CSU and Scott Rouse for Radford to be the starters.
