CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern clinched the series victory over Radford behind a 2-0, shutout victory on Sunday afternoon. This marked the second shutout victory over the Highlanders of the weekend and helps keep the Buccaneers in the driver's seat of their bid for a spot in the Big South Championships.
Runs were hard to come by both teams in the game due to a masterclass from each pitching staff. The Buccaneers were able to scratch one across home in the third and sixth innings each to get their 2-0 lead.
In the third,
Lucas Pringle had a leadoff double to right center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Later in the inning,
Sam Low had a groundout that scored Pringle and broke the tie.
In the sixth,
Dakota Miller got to second off a fielding error on a flyball in right field with two outs and
Chandler Tuupo was intentionally walked to have two runners on.
BJ Banyon had a single up the middle to score Miller while Tuupo was thrown out at third base trying to advance. The umpires had to go to review to confirm Miller reached home prior to Tuupo being tagged to give the Bucs their second run of the day.
Matt Gallant had the start on the mound and turned in his best career performance in his 9
th outing of the season. He threw 108 pitches over 6.0 shutouts innings, both career-highs and got his first career win. Then he tied his career-best in strikeouts as he retired nine by it.
Evan Truitt picked up his fifth save of the season, second of the weekend, as he tossed the final 3.0 innings allowing just one walk during his time on the mound, shutting the door on the Highlanders.
Banyon and Pringle split the two hits for the Bucs while Low and Banyon provided an RBI each. Low, Tuupo and
Brock Kuehler each drew a walk in the contest. Kuehler also had a stolen base on the day. The two hits marked the fewest in a game this season for CSU and the two runs scored are the fewest in a win this year.
Charleston Southern returns to action on Tuesday evening for their home finale. They will be hosting The Citadel with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. with the action to be live on ESPN+. The regular season finale is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday at Winthrop with the Bucs looking to punch their ticket to the conference tournament to be held the following week.
