CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern claimed their first game against Georgia Southern of the series on Tuesday night by a final score of 14-8. The Buccaneer tallied nine runs in the first inning to give themselves an early lead to ride to the victory. Additionally, the Buccaneers' defense generated five double plays in the contest.
In the first inning, each of the first five batters for the Bucs reached base successfully.
Alex Marot had a two RBI single and
Nathan Martinez did as well to scratch the first runs across. The bases got reloaded as
Kain Collins drew a walk which led to
Blake Edgmon smashing a grand slam over the left field corner. The ninth and final run of the opening frame was notched off a
Chandler Tuupo single through the right side.
In the third,
Lucas Pringle had an RBI single as well. The fourth saw the Bucs tally four more runs. Edgmon,
Caden Wolfley,
Garrison Barile and
Mason Reising drove one run home apiece in the inning to cap off their scoring on the day.
The Eagles ended up plating eight runs over the final five innings, eliminating the chance for the run rule and the full nine innings being played. The visitors scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the ninth.
Edgmon led the team in RBIs with five while Marot and Martinez each had two. At the plate, they collected 15 hits, drew seven walks and were hit by three pitches. Edgmon, Wolfley, Tuupo and
Ethan Reader had two hits apiece.
Zach Stichweh started and threw the first 3.0 innings allowing just two hits and no runs to score.
Tyler Henshaw worked the fourth with three up, three down.
Bryson Huwar earned the victory with other pitchers being used including
Kayden Althoff,
Tristan Stephenson and
Hayden Henry. Stephenson threw a scoreless 2.0 frames in the contest.
Charleston Southern will be back in action this weekend for their first conference road trip of the series. The action begins on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
