CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern overcame a seven-run deficit entering the bottom of the ninth and used a walk-off, bases loaded walk in extra innings to claim the series over Presbyterian.
Mason Reising kicked off the afternoon with a solo home run in the bottom of the second on the first pitch of his at bat. In the top of the third, Presbyterian had a two-run homer to claim their first lead of the game at 2-1.
In the third,
Caden Wolfley tied the ballgame back up off an RBI single to right center that brought
Kain Collins home. In the fourth, Charleston Southern tallied three runs to reclaim the lead.
Nathan Martinez,
Ethan Reader and Collins each had an RBI single in the frame.
The Blue Hose answered once again with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the fifth to tie the game at five apiece. In the seventh, they went ahead with a two-run homer, followed by a double that brought home two in the eighth and capped it off with a three-run home run in the ninth to build a 12-5 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Buccaneers climbed back into it, with the inning started with
Blake Edgmon getting aboard with a leadoff walk.
Garrison Barile followed it with a single and
Tyler Wright had an RBI double to left center to score Edgmon.
Alex Marot had a bouncing single over PC's first baseman to score both runners and bring the deficit to four. The Bucs were then able to load the bases with
Lucas Pringle getting a single and
Nathan Martinez drawing a walk.
Gavin Speirs then stepped to the plate and on the second pitch of the at bat, sent it over the fence in right field for a grand slam and a tie ball game.
Hayden Henry entered for the tenth and struck out all three batters from Presbyterian by strikeout. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bucs got the bases loaded with walks and hit by pitches. Martinez stepped back to the plate and drew a walk to bring
Michael Rogers home and clinch the win at 13-12.
Edgmon led the team at the plate with three hits while Collins and Martinez also had multiple as they had two. Martinez and Pringle each drew two walks as well. In total, they had 15 hits, eight walks and two hit by pitches. Spiers led the team in RBIs with four while Martinez and Marot both had two.
Brady Bickett had the start and threw the first four innings allowing four earned runs and struck out five batters. Ayden Smith was the first out of the bullpen and allowed three earned runs. After this,
Drew Dawson,
Corbin Payne and
Hayden Henry each threw and inning with Henry's being the lone scoreless one.
Charleston Southern and Presbyterian return to Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. first pitch with the game to be available live on ESPN+. The Blue Hose will be looking to claim their first win of the series while the Bucs will be going for the sweep.
