Buccaneers Take Second at Furman Invitational Behind Strong Outings from Iriondo and Gillespie

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Charleston Southern competed in their first away meet of the season on Saturday as they raced in the Furman Invitational. The Buccaneers placed second at the meet with a team score of 42 points.

Furman won the meet with a score of 19 points with the Bucs taking runner-up accolades at the meet with a team total of 42 points. They finished ahead five other squads including a Big South member in Gardner-Webb.

Martin Iriondo and Griffin Gillespie led Charleston Southern to the finish line, taking fourth and fifth individually with times of 17:36.07 and 17:40.74. Following them, a trio of Buccaneers crossed the line together in 12th, 13th and 14th including Elijah Pabon (18:30.98), Earlon Baker (18:33.14) and Collin Kleinhen (18:34.23). A pair of returners in Jackson Lovvorn (16th – 18:42.66) and Andrew Cleland (17th – 18:44.98). Â

Charleston Southern sent 19 runners to compete at the race with the top 11 each breaking 19 minutes in the 6K and finishing inside the top 22.

The Buccaneers will be enjoy a weekend off before they head to Rock Hill, S.C. to race at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational on the morning of Friday, September 25.
