Tusculum powers past Charleston Southern, 58-7

Box score

CHARLESTON, SC - Tusculum's Ricardo Colclough returned a punt and an interception for touchdowns to spark the Pioneers to an easy 58-7 win over Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Field on Saturday afternoon.

Colclough's 85-yard punt return with 2:32 remaining in the first half put the Pioneers up 14-0 and seemed to break the spirit of the homestanding Buccaneers, who had battled through a scoreless first quarter. Colclough's interception return of 75 yards came with 6:41 left in the third quarter and put the game away at 35-7.

"He's certainly a special player," said CSU head coach Jay Mills of Colclough. "His punt return was the key play of the game. We're only down by seven and its nearing halftime and we feel pretty good about things. He breaks off the return and then they score again just before halftime to go up 21-0. My hat's off to Tusculum. We knew they were pretty good from looking at the film and they certainly looked good today."

Tusculum's high-powered offense finished with 475 yards on the day, averaging 6.8 yards per snap. Playing two quarterbacks, the Pioneers passed for 355 yards with Tony Colston hitting for 157 and Carson Bradley tossing for 151. Colston connected on 15-of-21 passes and two touchdowns, while Bradley hit 12-of-21 passes and one touchdown.

Charleston Southern (1-4) managed just 205 total yards with freshman quarterback Collin Drafts accounting for 241 yards through the air, completing 19-of-39 passes. CSU finished with minus 36 yards rushing, due in large part to Tusculum's school record 10 sacks. CSU's leading rusher, Robert Adams, was limited to just 23 yards on 12 carries. CSU came into the contest with only six turnovers in their first four games but committed seven (five fumbles, two interceptions) on Saturday.

"They took away any threat of a running game and then put tremendous pressure on Collin," said Mills. "We had a few chances in the first half to connect on some big plays but didn't hit them."

After a scoreless first quarter, Tusculum took a 7-0 lead with 10:10 left in the second when Jonathan Brewer (five catches, 56 yards) scored on an eight-yard toss from Colston. Colclough's punt return made it 14-0 and Bradley connected with Matt Riggs (four receptions, 103 yards) on a 29-yard pass with :40 left in the half.

Brewer and Colston connected again, this time from 27 yards, with 13:26 left in the third quarter for a 28-0 lead. CSU answered with their only score when Drafts hit Aaron Dunklin, who caught nine passes for 123 yards, on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 13:00 left in the third.

Colclough's interception return for 75 yards thwarted any CSU comeback attempt and the Pioneers added a safety when they blocked a punt through the endzone for a 37-7 lead after three quarters.

The Pioneers added three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the first coming on a 20-yard run by Chris Mosley with 12:47 remaining in the game. Third-string quarterback Cody Baugh hit Travis Oliver on a 47-yard touchdown pass with 9:50 left and Darren Jackson returned a Ryan Fleck fumble 12 yards for the final score with 1:03 left in the game.

Tusculum improves to 3-1 with the victory in defeating a Division I-AA opponent for the eight straight time.

Charleston Southern has an open date next week, followed by an October 11 contest at Virginia Military Institute.
