Women's Soccer Uses Own Goal, Penalty Kick To Push Past Wofford

Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern used a Terrier own goal and a Karen Knight (Lavale, Md.) penalty kick to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat Wofford College, 2-1, in NCAA Division I women's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The game was the nightcap of the Big South-SoCon Challenge, hosted by Charleston Southern University.

CSU (2-0) first capitalized on Christine Bethke's (Inner Grove Heights, Minn.) corner kick in the 50th minute. Bethke bent the shot from the left corner, ricocheting the ball off the defender assigned to the near post and into the back of the net. Later in the half, Emma Mattsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) was tackled in the box, and Knight's resulty penalty kick went to the right of Wofford's Austin Somers for the go-ahead score.

CSU fell behind in the 15th minute as Wofford's Kendra Merchant found a seam on the left side and put in the unassisted goal. The Terriers (1-2) carried the one-goal lead into intermission.

Both teams will compete in Monday's portion of the Big South-SoCon Challenge, with Wofford facing Coastal Carolina at 1, followed by Charleston Southern-Appalachian State at 3:30. Coastal Carolina won its contest against Appalachian State, 2-1, in today's first game.
