CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern (4-0) scored 14
unanswered points to beat North Greenville (3-2) 20-10 Saturday
afternoon at Buccaneer Field, taking the current winning streak to
nine games.
Leading the Buccaneer offense was senior QB Collin Drafts, who
was 23-32, throwing for 291 yards, and becoming the first QB in Big
South history to reach 8,000 passing yards in a career. A late,
11-yard run by Drafts as the Buccaneers ran out the clock gave him
29 rushing yards to lead the Buccaneers in that category for the
third straight game. Junior wide out Maurice Price brought in 10
catches for 69 yards, while Markus Murry hauled in five catches for
81 yards.
Junior linebacker Jada Ross was key in
stopping a potent NGU offense with 21 tackles, while Jonna Lee
added 15 of his own. The Buccaneers held Eric Moeller and the
Crusader offense to just 10 points, the first time that they have
been held under 28 this season.
The Buccaneers fell behind early for the second time in as many
games as North Greenville marched down the field on their first
possession and kicked a 35-yard field goal. An interception by
Patrick Jarrett on the NGU three yard-line for the Crusaders
thwarted an early scoring opportunity by the Bucs.
They would get on the board, though, as Drafts would find Markus
Murry for a 14-yard touchdown strike to put the Bucs up 6-3 mid-way
through the second quarter. NGU would take the lead into
halftime
After half, the Buccaneers took the lead back on an eight-yard
touchdown run by Collin Drafts, capping a seven-play, 60-yard drive
for CSU. With the third quarter coming to an end, North Greenville
tried to answer back, opting for a third try from the one-yard line
instead of a game-tying field goal, the Buccaneer defense held and
kept the lead at 13-10 for the moment.
The Buccaneers expanded their lead on a two-play, 80-yard drive
with a 72-yard completion to Clayton Coffman and an 8-yard
touchdown run by Drafts.
C.J. Hirschman would come up with a clutch interception in the
end zone with 4:40 to go helped CSU in icing away their
ninth-straight victory.
