Less than 48 hours after defeating S.C. State Tuesday, the Lady Bucs will return to the field Thursday at 3:00, when they will host the Bison of Howard University at Buccaneer Field.
Recent games have been kind to the Bucs, as the team rides a three-game winning streak into Thursday's encounter. On Tuesday, the Bucs were victorious 2-0 over the Lady Bulldogs, with sophomore Sarah Catenacci (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) scoring the day's goals in impressive fashion. Catenacci first ripped a shot past SC State goalkeeper Alechia Brothers for the opening goal in the first half, and then headed in a goal off a Jen Vroman cross (Piscataway, N.J.) to bring a close to the day's scoring.
The Bucs could have scored several more times if not for the goalkeeping of Brothers, who denied excellent scoring opportunities by both Rose Marie Senise (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Michelle Dennis (Ann Arbor, Mich.), who was denied a breakaway goal. Overall, the Bucs controlled the play Tuesday, firing 29 shots while limiting SC State to just five thanks to the continued exploits of steady defenders Brittany Bolick (Boone, N.C.), Jessica Kim (Austin, Tex.) and Emily Danchak (Woodbridge, Va.). The team will look to continue these levels of performance on both sides of the field on Thursday.
Howard enters the game at 1-10 on the year, but the Washington, D.C. school did pick up its first win of the season in its last game, a 1-0 victory over Delaware State last Friday in United Soccer Conference action. Leading the goalscoring for the Bison are both freshman midfielder Briana Gamble and freshman forward Rachael Lee with two goals a piece, while junior forward Natalie Williston has shown a knack for creating opportunites for her teammates, exhibited by her team-leading five assists.
The game against CSU is the first of three in a four day tour of South Carolina for Howard, a tour that will continue tomorrow at SC State before ending Sunday at Francis Marion.
For those unable to make it to the game on Thursday, there will be many ways to keep up with all the goings-on. Video and audio broadcasts of the game, as well as live statistics, should be available at the following links:
