CHARLESTON, SC- The Lady Bucs tied the Radford Highlanders in
their game Saturday with a final score of 1-1. The tie brings the
Lady Bucs to 7-4-3 on the season, and 2-1-2 in league play, while
the Highlanders move to 9-2-4 on the season.
The game was a wet and soggy one that sent many players sliding
and skipped the ball in unpredicatable patterns that made it hard
for either team to fully gain control of the game. The matchup was
a physical one that resulted in a total of 13 fouls on Radford and
8 on the Lady Bucs. Despite outshooting their opponents 20-11, the
Lady Bucs were unable to pull ahead of the Highlanders in two
over-times.
The first period would be started by a goal from Radford's
Ashley Johnson in just over three minutes of play. CSU would not
give in easily with a total of 8 shots in the first half to
Radford's 5. The Lady Bucs would also tally 5 corner kicks to the
Highlander's 1, but the soggy ground and cold wind would make it
difficult for the Lady Bucs to capitalize.
The second half would start much of the same way, but as the
rain let up, the Lady Bucs looked for opportunities to pull ahead
of the Highlanders. The Lady Bucs would take a total of 9 shots in
the second half and held the Highlanders to only 3 attempts. CSU
would score the goal to tie the game in the 87th minute of play
when senior Emma Mattsson would find senior Brianna Murphy outside
the 18 yard box, where Murphy would fire the ball into the goal
past Radford's keeper, Lisa Lubke. The goal ties Murphy with
sophomore Michelle Dennis to lead the team with 7 goals on
the season, and gives Mattsson her 5th assist of season, moving her
into first to lead the team in assists this season.
The two teams would battle to win the game outright in two
over-times, where the Lady Bucs had several chances to take the
game, but were unable to finish on any attempts.
The Lady Bucs have outshot their opponents this season 279-159,
and have had a total of 93 corner kicks to their opponents' 62.
CSU kepper Alyssa Budros tallied another 6 saves in the game to
bring her season total to 38 (.760).
The Lady Bucs will be back in action on Monday, October 20 at 3
pm to take on Winthrop at home.
