LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty rolled up 321 yards of total offense in
the first half en route to a 42-0 victory over Charleston Southern
for the Flames' homecoming game, Saturday. It was the
second-straight week that CSU has served as the homecoming
opponent, after doing so at Stony Brook.
The Flames finished the game with 492 total yards to the Bucs'
191. Brock Smith finished 17-27 for 269 yards and two touchdowns
and one interception, which came on a long pass with time winding
down in the first half. Rashad Jennings added 127 yards on the
ground with two scores of his own to pace the rushing attack.
For CSU, Tribble Reese completed 15 of his 34 pass attempts for
a total of 129 yards, but two interceptions. Reese had his best
rushing game of the season, though, carrying it six times for 21
yards. Defensively for CSU, it was Josh Warrior with 11 stops,
while Chris Kuzdale forced a fumble, his second of the season. CSU
also had four tackles for loss on the day and one sack by Dorein
Perkins.
"My hat goes off to Coach Rocco and the Flames," said CSU Head
Coach Jay Mills. "They have really got things rolling here and
played extremely well. Pair that with the fact that we really hurt
ourselves and it leads to a very unfavorable score for us. Aside
from football, though, I am so pleased to be associated with two
teams that are here for more than just football, but really are
about advancing the Kingdom of God and doing things for His
glory."
It was a 69-yard pass from Smith to Jonathan Crawford that gave
the momentum to Liberty on their first possession of the game,
finishing a quick five-play, 89-yard drive. The first blocked punt
of the season for CSU set up Liberty on a short field and a reverse
to Dominic Bolden went the distance for a 25-yard touchdown to make
it 14-0, quickly.
After a successful onside kick bought an extra possession for
CSU to start the second half, Ivey caught a pass in the backfield
and scampered 35 yards to set up CSU first and goal. The Flames
defense was up to the challenge, making a stop on the first two
attempts for CSU to ruin the shut out. On third down, a pitch to
B.J. Hackworth came in high and Hackworth fumbled the ball into the
end zone, giving the ball back to Liberty at the 20 yard line.
The Buccaneer defense got a stop of their own as Liberty moved
into the red zone, but Matt Bevins' 31-yard field goal sailed wide,
giving it back to CSU. The stop helped CSU keep Liberty off the
scoreboard for the duration of the third quarter.
Liberty added a touchdown to their lead on their first drive of
the fourth quarter as they worked it down 84 yards on nine plays to
go up 42-0.
A muffed punt return by Aaron Hewlett was recovered by Fred
Godfrey to set up CSU inside the red zone for the second time in
the game. Reese found Markus Murry on the second play from
scrimmage, going for 16 yards and setting up a first-and-goal.
Again, it was a CSU miscue that hurt the scoring opportunity as a
bad snap resulted in a 28-yard loss.
Charleston Southern will host their own Homecoming and Hall of
Fame Weekend next week as they host VMI for a 1:30 p.m.
kickoff.
