Box score
CHARLESTON S.C.- The Lady Bucs improved to 5-4-1 on the season
this afternoon with a 5-0 win over South Carolina State who fell to
1-4-1 on the season. The Lady Bucs clearly controled the game as
the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State struggled to keep pace
with the forceful Lady Bucs.
The Lady Bucs were quick to prove who was in control with a goal
from Briana Murphy only a minute and a half in to the game, her
first of two goals for the game. CSU would continue their drive
toward the goal with five shot attmepts, when a foul on South
Carolina State inside the box would give CSU a penalty kick.
Briana Murphy would take the kick into the corner of the goal past
the Lady Bulldog's goalkeeper Alechia Brothers for her, and the
team's, second goal of the game to make the score 2-0 in the 15th
minute of play.
Senior Sarah Catenacci would come in off the bench in the 20th
minute of play, and score her third goal of the season less than
two minutes later off an assist from Lindsey Trexler at the top of
the box, giving the Lady Bucs a 3-0 lead, and Trexler her third
assist of the season. Feeling the rush of adrenaline, the Lady
Bucs would continue the scoring freenzy with a goal by sophomore
Caitlin Wesnesky, her third of the season, and giving Briana Murphy
her second assist of the season. The first half would end with
another ten attempts from the Lady Bucs and only two by the Lady
Bulldogs.
The second half would be much of the same with the Lady Bucs
outshooting their opponents 21-0. CSU would drive forward with the
ball for the first half of the second period, with shots spread
across the field coming from Olivia Urig, Sarah Catenacci,
Christine Bethke, Anja Djumisic and Caitlin Gunyan, all putting the
ball near the net, but with no avail. Sophomore Michelle Dennis
would be the final Lady Buc to add to the scoreboard in the 64th
minute of play to seal the game at a score of 5-0, with Anja
Djumisic tallying the assist, her first of the season.
The Lady Bucs would finish out the game with another ten shot
attempts to end the game with a total of 43 shots, and 28 shots on
goal. The 43 total shots is only one short of the program
record of 44 shots taken by the Lady Bucs in a single game. The
record of 44 shots was set against the South Carolina Lady Bulldogs
back in 2000.
The Lady Bucs are back in action at the Virginia Military
Institute on October 4 at 4 p.m.
