Bucs Take a 53-82 Hit From Highlanders

RADFORD, Va. - Charleston Southern looked to get back in the win column on the road vs. the Radford Highlanders Monday, but fell short, 53-82 in Big South action. The Bucs finished with three players scoring 12 points, but as a team shot just 36 percent from the floor and 25 percent behind the arc. CSU dropped to 5-10 on the season and 1-4 in the Big South while Radford improved to 8-9 with a 5-1 mark in the conference.

Kelvin Martin added to his freshman campaign with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and a 4-9 shooting effort. Omar Carter and Jamarco Warren also had 12 points apiece to round out the top scorers. For Radford, Artsiam Parkhouski poured in 19 points and 14 rebounds, with help from Kenny Thomas, who had 18 points.

The Highlanders had things working on their home court, in the early minutes of the first half, by way of a 13-1 run. CSU settled in on the offensive end after a three from Omar Carter, to cut the lead to eight with an 8-16 score and 11:24 on the clock. The Bucs traded baskets over the next few minutes, but couldn't slow down the hot shooting of Radford.

The Highlanders extended their lead into double digits before a Giedrius Knysas three put the score at 15-27 with 4:02 left in the half. CSU attempted to take back the momentum with a quick 7-2 run, thanks to five points from Warren. However, Amir Johnson hit a three in the closing seconds to take a 40-24 advantage heading into the locker room.

Carter came off the bench to score 7 points and pull down 4 boards, leading the way for the Bucs in the first half. Radford didn't do much wrong, out rebounding CSU by three and committing just two turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Joel Lamb started out the second half scoring five points, but the Highlanders responded with a pair of threes, to move the score to 29-48 with 18:37 on the clock. Carter continued his steady play and capped off a 5-0 run with a foul shot, cutting the deficit to 17 with 13:18 left in the game.

It was all Radford from that point, as they extended their lead to as many as 32 after a 21-6 run. The final minute featured a Warren three and two Martin foul shots, but the clock winded down with the final score of 53-82.

The Highlanders won the rebounding battle 40-34 and recorded 22 assists on 30 field goals. The Bucs battled for 40 minutes, but it simply wasn't their night shooting the basketball.

CSU will look for another strong effort this weekend when they travel to play the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Saturday, January 17th, for a 7 p.m. contest.
