Bucs Roll Over Hornets in 95-73 Decision

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern got back in the win column with a 95-73 victory vs. the Morris College Hornets Tuesday, at the CSU Field House. A complete team effort saw everyone who dressed for the game reach the scorebook. With the win, the Bucs improve to 6-13 on the season with a 1-7 conference record, while the Hornets dropped to 7-7.

CSU had five players in double figures, including a double-double from Omar Carter who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Johnson also came off the bench to tally 17 points on 6-10 shooting. JT Knight filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, 8 assists, 4 boards, and 4 blocks for the game. Jamarco Warren and Giedrius Knysas also chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Morris was led by Christopher Owens, who had a game high 26 points.

The Hornets showed no signs of intimidation in the early minutes, as they put up the first 5 points, on their way to an 8-2 lead. CSU however, responded with a 15-0 run to go up 17-8 with 9:42 on the clock. During that stretch, Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 6 straight points, before Kelvin Martin finished his second dunk of the night to cap off the run.

A fast paced first half continued with another 5-0 run for Morris. The Bucs took advantage of being in the bonus early and bounced back with an 8-0 run of their own. CSU had 6 straight free throws before another electrifying alley-oop from Carter to Martin. The Bucs went up by as many as 15, after a layup from Knysas with 2:52 remaining in the half.

Knight traded layups with Justin Beaufort to end the half, before a 36-24 score heading into the locker room. Martin had 7 points, 6 of which came on dunks, to go along with 3 boards in the first half. CSU shot 50 (13-26) percent in the first 20 minutes, and out-rebounded the Hornets 27-19.

The Bucs started off the second half with a Tovi Bailey jumper before going up 39-24 two minutes into the half. The Hornets were able to trade a few baskets, but CSU took a 19 point lead after a Johnson layup and a 48-29 score, with 15:34 on the clock. Warren and Carter combined for 11 straight CSU points, pushing it out to a 70-46 advantage with 7:59 remaining in the game.

The Bucs traded baskets for the final minutes, but never lead by less than 16. A foul shot from Jonson put the final score at 95-73.

CSU exploded for 59 second half points and had a combined 51 points from their bench. The Bucs had 26 assists on 33 field goals, while shooting over 54 percent from the floor.

CSU will get back into conference play this weekend, when the travel to Coastal Carolina on Saturday, January 31st, for a 9 p.m. contest.
