Box score

CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern got back into Big South action with a 71-69 win over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Saturday, at the Kimbel Arena. Omar Carter led the Bucs with his second straight double-double, posting 24 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 10-16 from the field. CSU improved to 7-13 on the year with a 2-7 mark in the Big South, while CCU dropped to 9-13 and 3-7 in the conference.

In addition to Carter's 24 points, freshman Kelvin Martin added 14 of his own with seven rebounds and three blocks. For the Chanticleers, it was the inside game of Joseph Harris, Logan Johnson and Anthony Breeze that did the majority of the damage with the trio accounting for 40 of the teams 69 points. Harris led the way with 14 while Johnson and Breeze chipped in 13 apiece.

The CSU defense got things started, holding Coastal scoreless on an 0-9 shooting performance for the first 6:10 of the game, extending a six-point lead. The Bucs would not trail until the 3:36 mark, when a Harris jumper put CCU up 19-18. The Bucs responded to grab the lead back until a three by Steven Sexton with :16 left in the half gave the Chanticleers a 28-27 lead at the break.

Austin Johnson's three to start the second half put CSU back in front, where they would stay for the majority of the second half. After leading by as many as eight in the second half, CSU withstood a charge by the home team that would tie the game at 57-57 with 7:15 to go. A13-5 run, capped by Carter layup with 2:36 to go put CSU up eight again at 70-62 and again the Bucs would try to hold on.

After seeing their lead trimmed to one with just over a minute to go, it would again be up to the defense to salvage the second League victory on the road this season. CCU missed all three shots to win the game and Johnson grabbed a long rebound with .02 seconds left to seal the deal.

The Bucs will return home Monday night to face High Point as they look for the season sweep of the Panthers. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip as part of a double header with the women's basketball team.
