Postgame quotes from Charleston Southern's 47-10 victory over
Savannah State:
QB A.J. Toscano
On the improvements the team has made in the past two weeks:
"It's starting to come together. We played a tough schedule at the
beginning but it's starting to come together now. Everyone is
coming together as a team. We're getting better every week. It's
the small things - blocking, route running, backs hitting their
holes."
On the play of the offensive line:
"The line is stepping up in a big way. They've played well all
season, opening up big holes. They are making it easy for the
playmakers. They're giving me a lot of time to throw, and it's easy
to make big plays when you've got time like that."
DE Ryan Ard
On the improvements the team has made defensively:
"We're simplifying our defense and each person is learning to play
their game. It's really helped us over these last two weeks."
On how the bye week will help the team:
"We've got some guys banged up, so we've got to get them better,
and we've got to prepare for out first conference game against
Gardner-Webb. It couldn't come at a better time."
Head Coach Jay Mills
On how the difficult early season schedule is helping the
team:
"We've had things modeled for us. Florida and USF have modeled to
us how a top level team attacks each ballgame. We want to develop
that same mentality."
On how this year's easy victory over Savannah State was
different from last year's struggle:
"A year ago, we had to hold on to beat Savannah State. Last year we
felt like we were playing to win the game instead of trying to be
excellent. That's something we were trying to get across and our
guys bought into it today - excellence on each and every play."
On the season-best performance from the offense:
"It's a matter of execution, because really, we're calling the same
plays every week. But everybody has to do their job for us to have
this kind of success. We just went out and tried to run our plays
to the best of our ability."
On the stellar play of A.J. Toscano:
"He's a dual-threat. He is an outstanding quarterback and above
that, an outstanding person. He'd be the first to tell you that he
couldn't do it without the people around him, the protection and
the backs and receivers."
On the performance of the offensive line:
"The (offensive line) did a great job up front. That's a reflection
on (Offensive Line Coach) Chuck Kelly and the job he's doing."
On his outlook for the rest of the season:
"We are persevering as a team, we're persevering as individuals and
the best is yet to come."
On blocking a punt for the second game in a row:
"That was a great individual effort on the part of Anthony Velez.
We actually didn't call for the block on that play."
On how he wants the team to approach the bye week:
"I told the guys to enjoy this week, but Monday and Tuesday we need
to hit it hard on the practice field. If we do that, we plan on
taking the rest of the week off the recharge."
