CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern soccer team fell behind twice against Newberry College, but the Buccaneers were able to come-from-behind and hold serve on their home field in a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon.
For the second-straight game, the Bucs fell behind within five minutes of kickoff. Jesse Langdon gave the road scarlet and gray a 1-0 advantage in the 4th minute with a header from inside the six-yard box after a nice cross from Lora Moore.
The first half would end in a 1-1 stalemate after Michelle Dennis tied the game with a nifty goal in the 20th minute. Rebecca Hollstegge possessed the ball near midfield and sent it downfield to Caitlin Wesnesky. She flicked it off her head past the final defenders to a racing Dennis. Dennis took a touch and shot past the charging NC goalkeeper.
It took only 23 seconds after the start of the second for Newberry to regain the advantage.
CSU goalkeeper Jena Lalich hadn't seen action since playing 22 minutes against Alabama State Aug. 28, and she replaced starter Alyssa Budros at the start of the second.
Lalich's rust showed early as she allowed the go-ahead goal to the road squad. She held her line firm after that, though, and didn't allow another goal the rest of the game.
That would prove crucial as the home team began scratching and clawing its way back.
Sarah Catenacci broke free from the defense in the 54th minute and was taken down from behind in the penalty area. The foul gave her the opportunity to notch the equalizer, and her PK was true.
Caitlin Wesnesky took a pass from Marky Boyce just four minutes later and flicked the game-winner past the goalkeeper.
Charleston Southern remains undefeated at home (4-0), and the team now has five players with double-digit points. Wesnesky joined the double-digit club with her three-point effort. Boyce (16 points), Catenacci (14), Dennis (13), Wesnesky (12) and Morgann Wood (12) have all eclipsed the double-digit plateau this season.
Budros allowed one goal and saved one shot before being replaced by Lalich. Lalich (1-0) earned the win after also saving one shot and allowing one goal.
Emily Rhoades (6-2) played all 90 minutes for Newberry and took the loss after giving up three goals, while saving nine shots.
CSU finished the game with a 28-8 shot advantage, and now move to 2-0 all-time against the scarlet and gray.
Mary-Kate Dunphy subbed in late and saw the first action of her career after an injury caused her to miss the first seven games of the 2009 season.
Charleston Southern will return to action Sept. 22 with a road matchup against College of Charleston in the annual Silver Cup Match. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
