Box score

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Another slow start cost the Charleston Southern soccer team a chance to take back the Silver Cup, as the Buccaneers were defeated by College of Charleston 3-0 Tuesday night at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.

The Buccaneers fell to 6-3 with one game to play until Big South Conference action begins, and the Cougars improved to 4-3-1.

CSU has yet to win back the cup ever since losing it in 2001, and the Buccaneers move to 0-7-4 in the last 11 meetings.

Charleston Southern allowed a goal within the first five minutes for the third-straight game. This time the Bucs gave up the early advantage when Annie Pease headed the ball off a deflected corner in the fourth minute.

Maryam Buazza put the home side up 2-0 with a goal inside the six-yard box in the 22nd minute after an offensive breakdown by Charleston Southern.

CSU could not find the final piece in a wide-open game that saw plenty of breakaways go both ways. The Cougars were able to spread out the Buccaneer defense and make numerous runs up the wings, which led to the opening-half goals.

Marky Boyce had a chance to put the road side on the board in the 53rd minute, but her shot hit the crossbar from just inside the box. Caitlin Wesnesky tried to head in the deflection and Sarah Catenacci took a shot after the failed header, but nobody could finish the job.

Alyssa Bearden added a final goal for College of Charleston in the 87th minute.

CSU starting goalkeeper Alyssa Budros (5-3) took the loss after allowing two goals and recording just one save. Jena Lalich relieved Budros for the second 45, and she allowed one goal and saved one shot.

Sarah Wiggers played the first 45 minutes in net for College of Charleston and earned the win, saving three shots. Katie Tate played the second half and didn't face a shot on goal.

CSU was outshot 10-8, and this was the first time the Buccaneers have been shutout all season.

Charleston Southern will be back on the road for a 2 p.m. matchup Sept. 27 against Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C.
