FARMVILLE, Va. - Despite falling behind in the fourth minute of the game, the Charleston Southern soccer team fought back to take down University of Richmond 2-1 Friday evening on the first day of the Longwood Tournament.
This was the first meeting between the two schools, and the Spiders (1-3) came into the matchup ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The victory gave CSU its first win in program history over a regionally ranked opponent, and this is also the first time Charleston Southern has started a season 4-0.
It wasn't easy getting started though, as a goal by Richmond player Kelsey Rdzanek in the fourth minute gave the Spiders the early advantage.
Super-sub Michelle Dennis came on and used her speed to notch the equalizer in the 31st minute with an assist to Jen Vroman.
Caitlin Wesnesky put the Buccaneers up for good in the 43rd minute, and CSU played stringent defense in the second half to protect its lead and capture the victory.
Charleston Southern goalkeeper Alyssa Budros improved to 4-0 this year after collecting two saves and allowing just one goal. Richmond keeper Andrea Young saved three shots and allowed two goals, earning the loss.
The Bucs outshot the regionally-ranked Spiders 14-7 in a dominating performance.
Dennis scored her third goal of 2009, and Wesnesky notched her second tally. Hollstegge assisted on her second goal and Vroman recorded her first assist of the year.
Charleston Southern will play host school Longwood University at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the final game of the tournament. LU (1-2) took the field after CSU and defeated Coastal Carolina 2-1 to earn its first win of the season.
