CHARLESTON, S.C. - After a shaky start to the game, Sarah Catenacci and Marky Boyce gave the Charleston Southern soccer team key goals in a hard-earned 2-1 victory over The Citadel Wednesday evening at WLI Field.
The Bulldogs (2-2, 0-0 Southern Conference) were the aggressor out of the gates, owning possession through the early going. CSU goalkeeper Alyssa Budros came up with two huge saves to give the road blue and white a key swing of momentum and keep the game scoreless.
Despite switching the field and going on the attack, the Bucs (5-1, 0-0 Big South Conference) had trouble connecting on the final piece and could not take control of the scoreboard.
That was until the 31st minute when Catenacci was able to solve
the defense. She held possession on the flank 35 yards away from
the goal. She beat one defender, and then another, and then kept
sliding across the top of the penalty area until she beat every
last Bulldog.
When she saw an opening, she took advantage of her opportunity with
a well-placed shot with her weaker foot that went low, far post
into the back of the net. Her fifth goal of the season gave CSU the
lead.
Neither team could score again, and the Buccaneers entered intermission with the 1-0 advantage.
Dianna Martin equalized in the 59th minute with help from Nikkita Persaud and Amy Loughran, but the Bulldogs would not be able to stop the Charleston Southern offensive attack.
Lindsey Trexler played a nice 1-2 combination near midfield with Morgann Wood, who slid Trexler through along the left sideline in the 63rd minute. The senior captain took a couple of touches, beat a defender and sent a cross into the box back to a streaking Wood.
The ball slid off Wood's head to an unmarked Marky Boyce, who finished with a fantastic strike in the upper right corner of the net.
The Citadel owned the majority of possession in the final five minutes, and used intense pressure to keep the ball in its offensive half of the field. The Bulldogs could not finish, however, and CSU escaped with the hard-earned victory.
The Buccaneers outshot the Bulldogs 24-9, and improved the all-time series record to 4-0-1.
Budros had five saves and allowed the one goal to move to 5-1 on the season. Whitney Nave took the loss after allowing two goals and saving four shots.
The Buccaneers return to the field at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 for a road
matchup against South Carolina State University in Orangeburg,
S.C.
