Box Score Box score

RADFORD V.A. - Charleston Southern and Radford University played to a tie this evening at a score of 1-1. It was an extremely evenly played match throughout. The tie keeps both CSU and Radford with identical overall and conference records of 8-4-1 (2-0-1 BSC).

Radford and Charleston Southern always seem to play tight matches, and this evening's match was no exception. In the early going there were several frantic sequences in the back for both teams that would have normally resulted in goals. In the 15th minute the ball was sitting up in front of goal for senior Caitlin Wesnesky to punch home, but Radford's goalkeeper made a quick reaction save to retain her clean sheet. The RU keeper was playing well in the early going, with six saves in the first half.

The first goal of the match came in the 34th minute when Radford's Julie Ruh'E played a diagonal ball into space to a streaking Mary Wiley in front of goal. Wiley played a low ball past CSU's keeper for the 1-0 lead.

The Bucs went into halftime down 1-0, knowing that they had several quality chances to put away a goal and could not capitalize on their opportunities.

It was not long before Charleston Southern was able to breakthrough. CSU senior striker Michelle Dennis stayed after a loose ball just in front of the eighteen and was able to dig it out. Dennis sent a low shot to the right to beat the Radford keeper and level the score at one all. It was Dennis' second goal of the season, her first was a game winner in over time to beat High Point.

The game was back to a deadlock and both teams began to tighten up on defense, neither team allowing a quality chance on goal for the remainder of regular time. The matched seemed destined for extra time.

Both teams missed golden opportunities early in the first period of extra time. From that point on, neither seemed to be able to connect on passes in their attacking thirds and earn chances on goal. The match ended at a score of 1-1.

When asked about the draw with Radford this evening Head coach Eric Terrill said:

"Obviously after a 23 hour bus ride, which was a complete fiasco, coming here to Radford, I knew it was going to be one of the best matches of the year" coach Eric Terrill said. "Ultimately, to go through all of that, play them at their place, and come away with the tie, it is big for us. Radford is a good team and hopefully we will play them in the final"

CSU continues their weekend road trip with a match against VMI on Sunday. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.
