CHARLESTON, S.C - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers defeated
the Spartans of UNC Greensboro at a score of 77-67. Leading the
Bucs once again was senior guard Katie Tull with 21 points on
7-of-12 shooting from behind the arc. Tull has now moved into first
place all time in the CSU record books for threes made in a career.
The win improves the Bucs' record to 3-1 (0-0 BSC) and drops the
Spartans of UNC Greensboro to 0-3 (0-0 SoCon).
The Bucs started off the game with threes from Wasmer and Tull.
It was evident early that the Bucs were once again hot from behind
the arc, shooting 5-of-10 from deep in the first ten minutes.
Defensive ball pressure and scrappy play induced ten turnovers
from the Spartans in the first 7:30 of tonight's contest. The Bucs
hustled back on defense to draw several charges on the Spartans in
transition, as well as diving after loose balls on the court.
Senior guard Katie Tull's career shooting night from three-point
range a week ago seemed to be carrying over to tonight's contest.
Tull started off an astounding 5-6 from three point land, and on
her fifth make passed Pam Tolbert in the CSU record books for most
three pointers made in a career.
The Bucs stretched the lead to as high as ten and went into the
locker room at halftime with an eight-point advantage.
Charleston Southern continued to light it up from deep with
threes from Tull, Terry, and Alston within the first minute of the
second half.
UNCG began to focus on stopping the Bucs from getting open looks
on the perimeter, and the driving lanes began to open up.
Subsequently CSU scored on several easy baskets in the paint.
The Bucs' lead hovered around ten for most of the second half,
but the game got tighter in the final minutes. The Spartans of UNCG
missed a key layup that would have cut the lead to four with 2:15
to play.
Four Bucs scored in double figures on the evening.
The Bucs were outsized inside, but by no means were they
outworked. Both Lakeitha Alston and Lydia Johnson played extremely
well for the Buccaneers. Johnson tracked down eight boards and
added eight points for CSU, she also hit a pair of clutch free
throws in the last three minutes for the Bucs as well as score a
layup on a key late possession to extend the lead back to ten
points.
Lakeitha Alston only missed a double-double by one rebound with
12 points and nine boards.
Kelsey Wasmer and Helen Terry also had a solid performances for
the Buccaneers. Wasmer had the second double-double of her career
with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Terry added 13 points, shooting
3-of-5 from behind the arc.
Monique Floyd had a solid game for the Spartans of UNC
Greensboro in a losing effort, leading them in scoring with 16
while also pulling down five boards.
This is only the second time that the Bucs have defeated their
former Big South rival UNCG in their history. Those two victories
have come this and last year, bringing the all-time series record
to 14-2.
Charleston Southern will head to Lubbock, Texas later this week
to compete in the World Vision Classic Tournament. There the Bucs
will face tournament host Texas Tech, as well as Sam Houston State
and American University.
