CHICAGO/>, Ill./> - Four players finished in double digits to extend what had been a 53-22 lead at halftime into an 89-54 win as the CSU men's basketball team downed the Southern Jaguars in the final round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the Sears/> Center/>/>.
Kelvin Martin and Kenny Mitchell each had 15 points to lead the scoring, with Jamarco Warren adding 14 and Sheldon Strickland putting up 12. Martin also led the rebounding effort, grabbing nine boards to outrebound the Jags 37-25. The team shot 54 percent from the field, but was just 7-of-21 from downtown.
CSU was able to capitalize on the Jaguars' 21 turnovers, 16 of which were steals by the Bucs, by scoring a total of 28 points. Strickland and Johathan/> Brooks/>/> each had five steals, with Strickland also dishing out seven assists.
Julius Ingram led Southern's scoring effort with 14 points and six rebounds. Teammate Brandon White had 12 points and Blake Sanford had three assists. The Jaguars were 20-of-47 for 42.6 percent from the field.
Mitchell went to free-throw line and came away with two points to start the scoring off for the Bucs, who quickly jumped out to a 15-6 lead on a 3-pointer from Strickland just over minutes into the game. The Buccaneers kept up the fast-paced scoring; taking the lead into double-figures after Martin was fouled on a dunk and was able to capitalize on the ensuing free-throw to put CSU up by 12 with 13:33 left to go in the first.
Strickland sunk two quick shots from downtown, with Warren/>/> adding in two from the charity stripe and another 3-pointer to bring the Bucs' lead to 20 at 35-15 with eight minutes to go in the first half. CSU then scored ten unanswered points before the Jaguars were able to strike back with 3-pointer from Sanford/>/>. Southern went to the free-throw line late in the half, but the damaged had already been done as CSU boasted a 53-22 advantage at the half.
The Bucs didn't let up in the second half, but the Jaguars were able to keep pace with CSU as the team traded buckets early on with the Bucs narrowly outscoring Southern 13-10 in the first five minutes. The scoring continued to be a tight race, as CSU put up just four more points than Southern in the second half. However, the deficit leftover from the first half was too much for the Jaguars, as the Buccaneers were able to take the 35-point victory and claim their first win of the Chicago Invitational Tournament at 89-54.
CSU will return to the Buc Dome to host Toccoa/> Falls/>/> on November 30 at 7:30 p.m. They will then begin conference play at Coastal Carolina on December 4 at 2 p.m.
