CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern continued to struggle on the
road, dropping a 47-37 contest vs. the league leading Coastal
Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday, at Kimbel Arena. The Bucs had a
woeful offensive night, shooting just 26% (15-57) from the floor as
a team and 16% (3-19) from behind the arc. CSU dropped to 12-15 on
the season with the loss and 6-10 in Big South play while CCU
improved to 24-5 and 13-3 in the conference.
Perhaps the lone bright spot for CSU was Kelvin Martin, who
posted double-double with a game high 14 points and 10 rebounds off
the bench. Jamarco Warren also chipped in with six points,
including a pair of threes. CCU had 11 points from both Kierre
Greenwood and Danny Nieman, while Joseph Harris recorded nine
points and 19 boards.
The Chanticleers led the entire game, starting with a Greenwood
jumper three minutes into the contest. The Bucs had multiple ties
to follow, including a Martin jumper that moved the score to 6-6 at
the twelve minute mark.
From there, CCU rattled off an 11-3 run to take a 17-9 advantage,
late in the first half. The scoring struggles continued for both
teams, but the Chanticleers managed to take their biggest lead of
the game at 21-11, with 1:51 remaining in the half.
CSU had the last bucket of the half, thanks to a Martin layup with
50 seconds on the clock, making it a 21-13 Buccaneer deficit at the
intermission. The Bucs shot just 6-31 in the opening frame for 19%
and were 0-9 from long range.
CSU came out of the gate with a 7-0 burst to start the second half,
capped off by a Jeremy Sexton three that made it a 21-20 score at
the 16:32 mark. After trading threes, CCU used a 6-0 run to go up
30-23 with 14:31 on the clock. The Bucs had it down to a four
point margin after three points from Martin, but the Chanticleers
went back up by eight on a Harris layup, moving the score to
36-28.
Despite a tough shooting night, CSU was within two after a 7-1 run,
capped off by a Martin jumper with 3:02 remaining in the game,
making the score 39-37. Unfortunately for Buccaneer fans, that
would be the last points they would tally, as CCU ended the game on
a 7-0 run. CSU couldn't convert on a few late threes, bringing the
final score to 47-37.
CSU will look to bounce back with their final two games at home,
starting with VMI on Thursday, February 25, at 7:30 p.m.
