CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tom Burkett and Walt Quattlebaum were each
able to touch home plate for the Charleston Southern baseball team,
but the Buccaneers were defeated 17-2 by Virginia Tech Friday
afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
This was the first meeting between the Bucs (2-3) and Hokies
(2-2) since the 2003 season.
Virginia Tech posted runs in each of the first two innings and
blew the game open with four in the third and five in the fifth.
CSU tacked on runs in the third and fifth innings to take away the
shutout, but three from Tech in the sixth and three more in the
ninth allowed the Hokies to pull away for the 17-2 victory.
Tech finished the game with 19 hits to just nine for Charleston
Southern.
Burkett and Tyler Thornburg led the way for CSU as each
collected two hits. Burkett and Quattlebaum scored and Brantley
Meier picked up the lone run batted in.
Charleston Southern used six different pitchers led by George
Schaefer. He pitched 2.1 innings and didn't allow a run. He only
allowed two hits and struck out two.
Jesse Cadenhead (0-1) started the game and lasted just 3.0
innings after giving up six runs on eight hits. Patrick Dolan, Tim
Flight, Michael Catoe and Matt Walker all saw time on the mound for
the Buccaneers.
Austin Wates and Ronnie Shaban each had four hits for the
Hokies. Steve Domecus had two home runs and picked up three runs
batted in. Anthony Sosnoskie and Domecus had back-to-back homers in
the third inning. Sosnoskie and Sean Ryan also had three RBI.
Justin Wright (1-1) pitched six strong innings and only allowed
two unearned runs on seven hits. Jake Joyce, Ronnie Shaban and
Brent Zimmerman all saw an inning of work and combined to allow
just two hits and no runs.
The Hokies move to 4-2 all-time against CSU.
Charleston Southern and Virginia Tech will meet in the second
game of the three-game set at 2 p.m. Feb. 27 at CSU Ballpark.
