Postgame Quotes from CSU vs. Mars Hill

Postgame quotes from Charleston Southern's 28-14 victory over Mars Hill.

Head Coach Jay Mills

General thoughts about the game:
We have a standard of excellence that we're trying to attain, and I thought it was interesting how the first game, you really saw that from the offense. We made 9 out of the 10 goals, but you didn't see it defensively. And this was almost a converse perspective there. I think our offense made some big plays, but we just did not finish when we had an opportunity to finish some of those drives along the way. Plus, we want to give credit to Mars Hill. They came out and played. This is a big game, whenever a Division II plays a Division I. But there are definitely some things we need to clean up. We must certainly clean them up before next weekend.

On Gerald Stevenson's performance:
They told us because of wear and tear, we could only use him half of the time. So, we only used him when we had the football. We keep him on offense. Gerald did an outstanding job once again. He's just a competitive person. The thing I appreciate about Gerald, is everybody sees what he does when he has the football. But they don't realize the little things that he does in blocking, and being a decoy away from the football. He's a selfless player, but we're also not foolish enough to not make sure he gets his touches.

Next week's game against Hawaii:
A whole five minutes after the game, and I get asked about Hawaii. The first thing I'm trying to do is not to let anybody think about Hawaii until the game was over. That's always a difficult thing. I don't think you have to do a whole lot to motivate people to play an FBS opponent. These guys always dream, growing up, of having a chance to play on a stage like that. The next best thing to playing for these FBS teams is playing against them. So, we'll be motivated to go out and play a good football game, to represent the university, to represent the Lord and the things that we do. We really believe that this is an opportunity, again. It's kind of our last preseason game, meaning a game that doesn't count until we get to the playoffs in the Big South Conference at hand, which will be the week after the bye week.

On defense's improvement:
I think the thing is, we saw defense, offense and special teams over these three weeks, and where we're at is we need consistency. What a lot of people don't realize is that we're playing a lot more people than we've ever played before. So, we've been working toward developing depth. For instance, you saw a blocked punt today by our special teams unit. So, we can, and I really believe that we will have all three phases peaking as we get into the next couple weeks and conference play. We have great leadership, but I don't underestimate what God can do. I don't underestimate what the leadership on this team can do.

Senior wide receiver Gerald Stevenson
On Mars Hill's defensive tendencies:
We did a lot of film study. We noticed that they are a cover four team, which basically means man (defense). So, the receiving corps just focused on speed and getting out of our breaks. Coach Mills called plays that put us in good position.

On moving into second all-time in program history in receptions:
I was aware of it. I didn't know how close I was to it, but I knew I was around third or fourth. So, it feels good to get to second. I'm going to try to get first place. I'll try my best.
