CLINTON, S.C. - A windy Thursday evening match-up saw the CSU
Lady Buccaneers walk away with a 2-0 win against the home
Presbyterian College Blue Hose, in Clinton, S.C.
From the beginning of the match, Presbyterian looked to pressure
the visiting Lady Bucs of CSU and use the wind as an advantage as
balls were flighted in towards the CSU defense from all different
directions of the field. As CSU finally got the ball and game
under control, a Gina Thomas flick found an open Allison Lewis in
the 6th minute of play but Lewis' one time volley fell to the hands
of Presbyterian keeper Sarah-Beth Anderson. Only a minute later
Rebecca Hollstegge put in a good tackle at midfield to win the ball
for CSU and found an open Lewis again. Lewis with the ball at her
feet had a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque type step-over to get past her
defender then played a cross into the box. The cross found Toni
Lashley, who at first seemingly had the ball caught under her foot
but managed to get off a shot anyways inside the 18. Lashley's
shot found the back of the net to put the Lady Bucs up 1-0.
As the half moved forward, CSU looked to continue its pressure
as Hollstegge collected a ball 45 yards from goal and made a
knifing run through the PC defense. Beating two players,
Hollstegge then lifted her head up and had a dig at goal only to
have her shot pull wide at the last minute. With 22 minutes in the
half Lashley again threatened the PC goal as a searching ball was
played by Gina Thomas to Lashley. Lashley shrugged her defender
off in mid-stride and had a one time shot on goal that beat the PC
keeper but could only find the post. The Lady Bucs continued to
press and look for a second goal as Casey Bolduc found herself in
space. Bolduc looked up and from the right side of PC's 18,
unleashed a curling and dipping shot that was just barely pushed
wide by PC's keeper Anderson.
The half came to a close with Lashley looking to draw a foul in the
box which should have resulted in a penalty kick for CSU but the
center referee waved play on and told Lashley to get up that there
was no foul on the play.
The second half of the match started with PC pressuring the CSU
defense. For once in the game Caitlin Cody was called into action
as PC's Morgan Fragapane hit a looping shot from about 25 yards out
and Cody was up to the task to push the ball over the crossbar to
keep the score at 1-0. In the 51st minute of play, an Olivia Urig
free kick found the head of Katelyn Faucette who flicked the ball
on and found the back of the net. Faucette's header seemed to
catch PC's keeper off her line and fell right under the crossbar to
give CSU a 2-0 lead and 1st of Faucette's career.
CSU continued to push numbers forward to kill the game off and
almost found their third of the match when Lashley had a break away
but a bad first touch saw PC's keeper collect the ball with ease.
Seconds later a driven ball across the box almost found Lashley but
missed her. Gina Thomas at the backpost could not find a foot on
it either to put it in the net. As those two chances went begging
CSU still kept the pressure on and put the clamps on any PC
attack.
As the second half came to a close, the Lady Bucs possessed the
ball and put some players into the game who have not seen much
action this year to rest some of their starters. The game ended
and CSU walked away with a well deserved 2-0 victory against PC.
With the win CSU moves to 2-3 in conference play and 7-6
overall.
The Lady Bucs will now travel to Asheville, N.C. to play
UNC-Asheville on Saturday, October 15th with a noon kick off time.
The game will be webcasted via Big South Network and will also have
live stats as well.
