CSU Cruises Past Tigers

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern came out and shot three straight 3-pointers to get them on the board early as they cruised to a 67-39 win over visiting Voorhees College, at Buccaneer Field House in Charleston, S.C.
From the tip-off the Buccaneers found their form as Helen Terry
drained a 3-pointer in the Buccaneers first possession. The
Buccaneers started the game on a 14-4 run as Coach Julie
Goodenough's ball club looked in great form. Having a tough
shooting night in their last time out against Western Carolina, the
Buccaneers looked to get their stroke back. It paid off great
dividends as the first buckets of the contest all came from behind
the arc. Before Voorhees could take a timeout or gather themselves
the Buccaneers were on top of them with swarming defense as well as
double digit lead before they realized what happened. The lead
grew from 12 to 20 in a few quick possessions as the Buccaneers
found their open man behind the arc with their motion offense. On
a number of occasions the Buccaneers made sure to get in the extra
pass to find their open teammate with a better look at basket and
made the Tigers pay.
After the Western Carolina game, Coach Goodenough stressed that her
ball club needed to come out with a lot of intensity and from the
jump that is exactly what they did. At times bodies were all over
the floor diving for loose balls and also her team was like
gangbusters on defense causing Voorhees to turn the ball over 17
times. Helen Terry led CSU in the half with nine points apiece as
Rachelle Coward grabbed five rebounds with Lakeitha Alston and
Dotson snatching four rebounds. Coach Goodenough made clear to her
girls that they needed to crash the boards as well as contest for
rebounds. First half stats show that the Buccaneers grabbed almost
everything that did not tickle the twine on both the defensive and
offensive end. The bench for Charleston Southern also played a big
part as a number of players saw action in the first half. The
Buccaneers shot 37.2% from the field while dropping six 3-pointers
and forcing Voorhees to go 0-10 in the first half from the 3-point
line.
The Buccaneers came out firing in their first few possessions of
the second half to extend their lead to 39-17. The hard play
continued on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Down on the blocks for the Buccaneers, Lakeitha Alston, Anicia
Dotson, and Abby Wharton all made the Tigers double down on the
post and kicked the ball out to open players on the perimeter that
gave CSU open looks. Charleston Southern looked to expose the
Tigers as a Buccaneer was seemingly always open. A 30 point lead
at the 13:02 mark looked to grow as Goodenough's ball club looked
in complete control. Shay Jones and Kiki Rutledge shared the
responsibility at guard as starter Helen Terry got a rest. Trying
to stamp her mark on the 2011-2012 season Lakeitha Alston took over
on the low post. Alston seemed to have her way on the offensive
and defensive end grabbing rebounds and completing "And
one's".
Coach Goodenough's talk about intensity did not slack off in the
second half even though the Buccaneers at even given point were
leading by as many as 35. Voorhees College tried to get themselves
back in the game as Coach Glover got his ball club into a trap
defense as well as full court press but yet again the extra pass
was the killer for CSU. The savvy and clever Buccaneer guards saw
the traps coming and easily found passing lanes to swing the ball
to the open man creating wide open looks all over court. With the
Buccaneer faithful amassing in the upper 600's in number, Coach
Goodenough and her ball club put on a great display for the fans.
To cap the game off, a Kiki Rutledge steal then a Helen Terry
behind the back pass to Rutledge to finish the play got the fans on
their feet one last time as it solidified an amazing wind and night
for the Buccaneers. An up tempo, fast paced, sharp shooting squad
had the crowd on their feet "ooh-ing" and "ahh-ing" along with
holding up the 3-point symbol as the Buccaneers cruised to
victory.
Tonight looked to be a good night for Coach Julie Goodenough, who
was affected greatly by the passing of the Oklahoma State
University Women's Basketball coaching staff. Goodenough was the
Head Coach for the Cowboys before she started her stint here at
CSU. The pilot, as well as the staff were dear friends of
Goodenough. Goodenough herself during her time at OSU rode on the
plane that went down. The win for Goodenough was definitely a good
way to end a rather tragic time period from the weekend.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Tuesday, November 22nd as
they take on the Rams of Bluefield College. Coach Goodenough and
the Buccaneers look to improve to 4-1 on the season. The game will
have live stats and will be web streamed.
