CSU Rides High Against Highlanders

CHARLESTON, S.C.: Buccaneers make it four wins in a row, defeating Radford University 83-78 on Dec.1 in Charleston.

Saah Nimley recorded a career high 22 points for the Bucs to go along with two assists. Mathiang Muo went 4-7 from three for 21 points, while Kelvin Martin chipped in 17 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals. The Buccaneers shot 40.6% from the field and 69.7% from the charity stripe. CSU bested Radford in points in the paint (30-22), points off turnovers (19-10), second chance points (16-6), and forced 17 Highlander turnovers.

For RU, R.J. Price had 15 points while Jonathan Edwards and Tolga Cerrah both had eight rebounds.


Kelvin Martin put the Bucs on the board at the 19:10 mark with a soaring dunk put back; Mathiang Muo added a triple to put the Bucs up two, 5-2. Saah Nimley would knock down a three followed by a floater to put the Bucs up eight at 14-6 with 16:17 remaining. Arlon Harper would dish to a wide open Muo who would knock down another three at the 14:24 mark to give the Bucs the 10 point advantage, 19-9. Muo would quickly return the favor, dishing to a cutting Harper to make it 23-15 Buccaneers. Kyle Norren would hit two free throws to bring the Highlanders within one at 32-31 with 4:18 to go in the first half. After letting the lead slip away, Nimley would hit a triple to give CSU the lead back with 24 seconds remaining in the half, 40-38 Buccaneers. R.J. Price would hit a first- half buzzer beater to give RU the lead going into halftime, 41-40. The Bucs outshot the Highlanders 46%-42% in the first half and notched ten more points in the paints. CSU also led the rebounding count 19-18, while forcing seven turnovers. Radford's bench outscored CSU 21-9. The Highlanders shot 67% from deep compared to 43% by the Bucs. CSU was led by Muo's 11 points and four rebounds, Nimley added 10 with two assists. Darden led the RU attack with twelve (4-4 3pt's), and Tolga Cerrah grabbed a team-high five boards.

Muo would go one for two from the stripe to tie the game at 41-41 to start the second half. Muo would knock down a three followed by a Cedrick Bowen put back to give the Bucs the slim 48-47 lead with 16:45 remaining. An illegal screen by Javonte Green would lead to a Nimley three to put the Buccaneers up 51-49 with 13:40. Chance Smith would answer with a circus three as the shot clock expired to put Radford on top 52-51. Martin would sink one of two from the line to tie the game up at 52 a piece with 10:40 left. Martin would follow his own shot and power up for two to put the Bucs up three, 59-56 with 7:45 remaining. Bowen would make a bucket plus a foul shot with 5:38 remaining to give the Bucs the three point lead at 63-60 with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. A Martin jumper would extend the Buc advantage to 10 points, 70-60 with two and a half remaining. A three by R.J. Price would bring RU within seven 65-72 with less than two minutes left. Free throws would clinch the Buccaneer victory, 83-73, moving CSU to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in Big South Conference play.

CSU will be in action on Nov. 3 facing off against Big South Conference foe VMI at 5:30 p.m. in Charleston.
