GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Rachelle Coward scored topped 20 points for the second consecutive game but the Charleston Southern women's basketball team struggled against the University of Florida, losing, 83-59, on Tuesday evening at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville. The contest was part of the Gator Holiday Classic Tournament.
Coward's 21 points led the way for the Buccaneers, who shot 36.5 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc. CSU made only four 3-pointers in the contest.
Lakeitha Alston added 16 points, reaching double figures for the 10th straight game. Helen Terry had 14 points and three steals and also added a block for the Bucs. The Bucs were out-rebounded by the Gators, 43-33, and both teams recorded 20 turnovers.
UF's Jordan Jones had 20 points while Jennifer Jones put up a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Azania Stewart had five of the Gators' eight blocked shots.
The Gators jumped out to a 10-4 scoring run to start the game and the CSU deficit stretched to double digits as Florida sunk a 3-pointer with 12:46 to go in the first half. Alston had back-to-back layups and Coward drilled a three to bring the Buccaneers within nine.
Later in the half, a trey from Terry once again cut the deficit to nine before a bucket from Coward made it a seven-point game. Terry again nailed a shot from beyond the arc to bring the Bucs within five but the Gators led, 42-34, at the half.
The Buccaneers whittled the lead to four points early in the second half on a Whitney Collins layup, however, a 10-0 run by Florida pushed the margin to 64-46 and the Gators never looked back.
Charleston Southern will face the University of Maine on
Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in Gainesville as they wrap up play at the
Gator Holiday Classic.
