Bucs Rebound to Defeat Bearcats 9-5 at First Pitch Invite

GREENVILLE, S.C. - After falling to the Tigers of Clemson earlier today, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers rebounded in the second game of their double header by defeating the Bearcats of Cincinnati at a score of 9-5. The win brings the Buccaneers record to 3-4 (0-0 BSC) and drops the Bearcats of Cincinnati to 1-4 (0-0 Big Ten).

It was Charleston Southern's first win against a major conference FBS program since they defeated #6 Florida last season on May 14, 2010, 6-3.

The Bearcats would jump out to a three run lead in the top of the first. In the third inning Charleston Southern would score their first run after Derek Smith singled and plated Jared Sustar from third.

The Bucs would add another run in the fourth when Brantley Meier singled to bring home Alex Tomasovich, narrowing the margin to 3-2.

The floodgates would open for Charleston Southern in the fifth. The Bucs would score five total runs, three of which were with two outs.

Charleston Southern would allow two runs in the top of the seventh that narrowed their lead to just two runs, but would bolster their lead by adding insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Getting the win on the mound was senior pitcher Jesse Cadenhead who went 6.1 innings, allowing five earned runs and eight hits while striking out five batters. He had a rocky start allowing three runs in the first inning, but would recover and proceeded to pitch five consecutive scoreless innings for Charleston Southern.

Charlie McCready pitched well for the Bucs in relief of Cadenhead, allowing only one hit in 1.2 innings work and Corey Deighan got the final three outs for the Buccaneers in non-save situation.

Pacing the Buccaneers at the plate was designated hitter Derek Smith who went 4-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Buccaneer outfielder Brantley Meier also had banner day at the plate, going 3-for-5. Meier gave the Bucs timely hitting with a career high four RBI.

The Bucs will return home to Charleston where they will face Savannah State on Tuesday, Mar. 1. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
