ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kelvin Martin scored his 1,000th career point early in the second half and Jamarco Warren put up 20 points in what would be his final game in a Buccaneer uniform as the CSU men's basketball team dropped a 72-63 decision to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in the Advanced Auto Parts Big South Conference Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Justice Center in Asheville, N.C.

The Bucs' 16 wins were the most since the 1996 season, and their nine conference victories were also a program record. CSU finishes the season with a 16-16 record overall and a 9-9 Big South record.

Warren put up 20 points and added in four assists as well. He ends his career as the school's all-time leader in games played with 121 and ranks second in CSU history and seventh in BSC history with 1,968 career points.

Martin, who scored his 1,000th career point on a layup in the second half, recorded his 11th double double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The 2011 Defensive Player of the Year also led the team's defensive effort with two blocks and a team-high three steals. Jeremy Sexton scored in double figures as well, putting up 11 points and dishing out a team-high five assists.

Turnovers were a major problem for the Bucs, who gave up possession 23 times. Only nine of those turnovers were steals by UNCA. However, the Bulldogs were able to greatly capitalize on almost all of the CSU miscues, scoring 28 points off of turnovers.

CSU shot as high as 70 percent in the second half but struggled late to finish the game 22-of-48 for 45.8 percent. They were 6-of-19 from beyond the arc for 31.6 percent and an uncharacteristically low 65 percent at the free-throw line. They were able to outrebound UNCA 36-28, and came away with the 13-9 advantage in second chance points.

The Bucs played the majority of the game without the services of starting forward Johathan Brooks, who was ejected at 8:42 of the first half.

Matt Dickey led all players in scoring with 29 points, going 8-for-8 in at the free-throw line. Jaron Lane and Chris Stephenson had 13 and 12 points, respectively, while John Williams led the rebounding effort with seven boards and 11 points.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-3 lead as the Bucs managed just one field goal in the first four minutes of action. A shot from downtown by Warren evened things up at 6-6 before Sexton added a layup to give CSU the slim lead. The two teams traded buckets, and the lead, before a dunk by Zimmy Nowgbo put the Bucs ahead 20-15 with 7:51 to go.

A trey from Dickey tied things up, but Warren sunk one of his own to take back the lead at 23-20. Lane again tied things up at 23-23, but a dunk from Martin started 6-0 run by the Bucs put them ahead 29-23 with 2:38 to go. UNCA then went on a 6-0 scoring streak of their own, hitting the free-throw line for two points, to tie things up 29-29 at the half.

Martin converted on a 3-point play early in the half to put the Bucs up by two. Sexton sunk a shot from behind the arc to give the Bucs a four point lead before Sheldon Strickland added another. However, the Bulldogs' Stephenson put up four as the two teams kept things close.

A layup from Martin gave the Bucs a four point advantage, which they struggled to maintain. Primm and Dickey combined to tie the game up for the 10th time at 46-46 before Dickey sunk a trey to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead at 49-46 with 10:26 left to go.

An 8-0 run by the Bulldogs put them up 57-48 on a layup by Lane, but Martin hit the free-throw line to shrink it down to a seven point deficit. Dickey then hit the free-throw line to bring the UNCA advantage to double digits at 61-50 with 3:10 to go. Martin matched his efforts with layup, but Dickey added in two more from the charity stripe. Warren then got his turn at the line, sinking two, before adding a trey to cut the CSU deficit to six at 66-60 with just over a minute to go.

Primm had a chance to wrap things up at the line, but sunk just one shot in four attempts. Warren hit the line for two before sinking a shot from downtown to bring CSU within three with just under a minute to go. However, Dickey and Lane were perfect on free-throws, adding in four easy points before a fast break dunk from Williams capped things off to hand the Bucs the 72-63 loss.

Asheville will face No. 7 High Point, who upset No. 2 Liberty 66-60 in the Quarterfinal match up in Lynchburg, Va. The semifinals will take place at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., on Thursday.
