MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's tennis team fell to city rival College of Charleston, 5-2, Sunday, March 13 at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point. The Buccaneers were playing their first of three matches to be contested in three days.

Charleston Southern is now 2-4 on the season, while College of Charleston advances to 5-5 after winning two matches Sunday.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead after claiming all three doubles matches by identical 8-5 scores. The No. 2 pair of Katie Lee and Kinsey Casey defeated Alia Nour and Brooke Pletcher. Emma Hayman and Irene Viana then earned victory against Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic at No. 1 doubles. Caroline and Christin Newman won, 8-5, over Alexandra Walters and Heather Isbell.

College of Charleston then built its advantage to 3-0 after winning the first two completed singles matches. At No. 2 singles, Hayman defeated Pletcher in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Lee claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Susita Das while playing the No. 6 match.

Caroline Newman secured the team's victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dzakovic in the No. 3 match. CSU's Alia Nour then earned the Bucs' first triumph of the day, defeating Casey, 1-6, 7-5, 14-12 at No. 4.

College of Charleston added one more win, as Mulligan beat Heather Isbell in a three-set match at No. 5 singles. Makhova won the final completed match of the day, earning CSU's second singles victory, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Charleston Southern will compete in home matches each of the next two days, starting with a 2 p.m. match Monday, March 14 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center against Jacksonville State. The Buccaneers will then play host to Southern Illinois Tuesday, March 15 at 2 p.m.
