CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's tennis team competed against No. 61 Winthrop Friday at the Buccaneers Tennis Center. The Big South-leading Eagles won by a score of 7-0, as CSU earned victory at No. 1 doubles for its lone match win of the day.

The Buccaneers now own a 5-6 record on the season, including an even 2-2 mark in conference play, while Winthrop (12-10) remains undefeated in Big South matches, at 3-0.

Winthrop claimed the first point of the match by winning two out of three doubles matches. However, CSU's No. 1 pair of Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic defeated Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson, 8-6. Makhova and Dzakovic are now 3-1 together at No. 1 doubles in conference play.

Giovanna Portioli and Sandra Herrera defeated CSU's Alexandra Walters and Angie Torres, 8-2, in the No. 2 match, and Andressa Garcia and Elizaveta Zaytseva won, 8-1, over Brooke Pletcher and Alia Nour.

The Eagles then earned all six victories at singles, despite having the No. 1 and No. 4 matches come down to a tiebreaker. At No. 1 singles, Alkema won a tight match against Makhova, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Zaytseva defeated Dzakovic and Herrera beat Pletcher, both in straight sets, at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Portioli won the tiebreaker, 10-2, over Nour in the fourth flight, after splitting the first two sets. Garcia bested Torres, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5, and Wilkinson won in two sets against Walters.

CSU will return to the courts Saturday, March 26, playing host to Presbyterian College in a Big South match which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
