Bucs Drop Saints 5-4 to Sweep Series

CHARLESTON, S.C. -The CSU baseball team completed a sweep of Siena College with a 5-4 decision over the Saints on Sunday at CSU Ballpark, marking one of the program's best starts since the 2000 season.

The Bucs moved to 7-4 with the win, while the Saints return home still looking for their first win at 0-9.

Anthony Markham gave up just one hit in 1.1 innings to notch his second win of the season, while Corey Deighan picked up his fourth save. Jesse Cadenhead got the start for the Bucs, giving up nine hits and three runs in 6.0 innings while striking out seven.

Neil Fryer took the loss for Siena, giving up 3 hits and two runs in 2.0 innings.

Offensively, Cody Austin led the charge by going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Brantley Meier went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Derek Smith and Matt Still each recorded a hit and a run, while Tom Burkett also had a run. The Bucs finished the game with nine hits and five RBI.

Dan Paolini went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for the Saints, while Mike Fish went 2-for-5 with a run as well. Siena had 12 hits and four RBI on the day.

Siena took an early lead in the first inning, as John Rooney walked, then stole second before Paolini homered to make it 2-0.

It took the Bucs awhile to catch up, with Still hitting a single to get on base in the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice bunt by Walt Quattlebaum sent Still to second before a throwing error sent Burkett to first and Still to third. Austin then singled to right field, driving home both Still and Burkett to tie the game at 2-2.

The Bucs then were able to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Smith singled to right center before a sac bunt from Still sent him to second. Quattlebaum singled to right center, driving Smith home to put the Bucs up 3-2.

However, the Saints kept themselves in the game with a run in the seventh. Fish singled to left field, and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Paolini then singled to left field to bring Fish across the plate and tie the game at 3-3.

The Bucs returned the favor at the bottom of the inning. Meier singled on a bunt, and then advanced to second on a balk. Jaren Sustar doubled down the leftfield line to drive home Meier, giving the Bucs the 4-3 lead. Nick Chinners ground out to the pitcher, allowing Sustar to advance to third on the play. Sustar then made it home on a throwing error by the Saints to add to the CSU advantage at 5-3.

Paolini walked to start the ninth, and made it to second when Kevin Quaranto grounded out to first. A throwing error by the Bucs allowed Paolini to make it home to bring the Saints within one. However, Andrew Sawyer flied out to center field and Vincent Citro grounded out the pitcher to end the game and give CSU the 5-4 win.
