BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Charleston Southern sophomore Jarrett Swan
fired a 4-over 76 and is alone in third place after 18 holes at the
2012 Western Kentucky University Kenny Perry Invitational. The Bucs
are fifth as a team after Sunday's opening round at The Club at
Olde Stone.
Swan had four birdies and played the back nine at even par to
move into contention early in the tournament. He was one of few
golfers to find success in tough conditions where no golfer is
under par after the first round in the 12-team field.
As a team, the Bucs sit in fifth after a team 324 (+36). They
are three strokes behind Akron for fourth and four strokes behind
Austin Peay State for third. Jacksonville State leads the
tournament at 17-over following a 305.
CSU leads Morehead State (Ky.) by six strokes.
The demanding course, the site of two previous NCAA Regionals,
played even tougher on Sunday with high winds throughout the day.
Gusts reached upwards of 40 miles per hour. Although there was no
precipitation, the windy conditions caused the average score to
balloon to 83.90. Only 12 players shot below 80 in the opening
round.
Freshman Nicolas Banea shot below the first round's average with
an 81 on the opening day. He is tied for 15th. Junior Ross Thomson
fired an 82 and carded his lone birdie on the par-5 11th hole.
Sophomore Choo Teck Ng finished with an 85 and is tied for 37th,
while junior Jason Fick shot an 89 and is tied for 50th.
Jacksonville State shot 305 (+17) in the opening round and holds
a ten shot lead over Louisville (315, +27) following Sunday's
opening round. Jacksonville State also owns the top two spots on
the individual leaderboard. Franco Grillo is the only player in the
field to shoot even par after opening with a 72. Teammate Tomasz
Anderson is in second place after shooting 74 (+2).
The second round begins on Monday at 9:00am CT while Tuesday's
final round begins at 8:00am CT.
