Box Score Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - High Point starter Ryan Retz (3-2) threw eight scoreless innings on just 83 pitches and gote enough offensive help as the visiting Panthers slipped by the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at the CSU Ballpark.

Charleston Southern (7-16, 0-1) also got a nice performance on the mound from starter Ryan Gunther (0-6), who allowed two runs on seven hits in seven plus innings of work. Gunther, who dropped to 0-6 this season, fanned six and walked two.

High Point's scoring came in the third. Panthers centerfielder Dane McDermott reached on an infield single with one out. After another out, Willie Medina walked. Sal Pezzino followed with a looping fly ball to left. CSU's Harrison Wilkins made a diving attempt but came up short, allowing the ball to trickle past him. Both runners scored, giving Retz all the runs he would need.

CSU did threathen in the fifth. After Chase Shelton's single, Walt Quattlebaum doubled off the wall in left, giving CSU runners on second and third with no outs. Retz, however, got Denis Buckley to ground out to the catcher for the first out, holding the runners. Robbie Streett then fouled out and Drew Woodall grounded to short to end the threat.

Corey Deighan relieved Gunther for the Bucs and went two scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

The two teams will play game two of the series at noon. Projected starting pitchers are Matt Armstead (2-2) for High Point and Patrick Dolan (2-1) for the Bucs.
