Lombard Sets Career Hits Record; CSU Falls to PC Twice

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Megan Lombard took over the Charleston Southern program record for base hits, but it was not enough for the Bucs to prevail as Presbyterian College swept a doubleheader, 6-1, and 2-1, at Buccaneer Field on Friday afternoon.

Lombard smacked a single to center field in her first at-bat in game one, and then passed Jill Shondel with the 208th hit of her career on an infield single to shortstop in the sixth inning of the second contest. CSU (19-16, 4-3) racked up nine hits only to leave ten runners on base in the first game, before generating just two hits versus PC's (10-19, 2-4) Kensley Loudermelk in the tail end of the double dip.

Game One
Morgan Dowdy (12-9) took the ball in each game of the twin bill, and was once again sharp early in the first one, as she set the first eight Blue Hose batters to come to the dish. PC mounted its first real threat of the day in the fourth, but Dowdy escaped unscathed and allowed CSU to move in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the frame.

The tally came with two outs, as Linzy Rother hammered a RBI double to the center field wall, allowing Melissa Adams to show off her speed by racing home all the way from first base.

PC wasted no time in responding, however, as the first three batters of the top of the fifth scored to stake starting pitcher Leslie Hensley (6-10) to a 3-1 advantage. Tera Powell singled to start the frame and then scooted up to second when Jill McLean worked a walk. Cat Tarvin did the rest of the work with one swing of the bat, launching a Dowdy offering deep over the right-center field wall for a three-run home run.

Dowdy lasted 5.0 innings in defeat, while allowing the three runs on six hits and a walk. She struck out one.

Jennifer Giles came out of the bullpen to put up a 1-2-3 sixth inning, but the Blue Hose once again played long ball to account for the final 6-1 margin in the seventh. Third-place hitter Shelby Petik did the honors this time, cracking a Giles changeup clear of the right-center field fence for a three-run circuit clout of her own.

The Bucs loaded the bases with nobody out in their final turn at-bat, but could not push anything across as Hensley retired CSU's three, four, and five hitters to preserve the PC win.

Game Two
PC pieced together a two-hit rally and took advantage of a CSU error to plate two runs in the second inning of game two.

Morgan Durham stroked a leadoff single and eventually moved to third via a stolen base, and Tricia Hood reached base on an error by Rother at first. Hensley then drove in the first run with a RBI groundout, before Powell powered a double to the left-center field gap to chase home Hood.

That was all PC would muster against Dowdy, who permitted the two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out four and going the distance for the 16th time this season.

CSU scored its only run in the fourth, as Jana Matthews laced a RBI single to right field, enabling Kristin Kelleher to score just ahead of the throw from PC's Hood. The Bucs had a chance for more with runners on second and third and only one out, but Loudermelk evaded further harm by notching a pair of punch outs.

Stephanie Sbardella was hit by the first pitch of the seventh inning to reach base as the tying run, and moved to second when Trea Steele laid down a sacrifice bunt. Loudermelk was up to the task once again, however, clinching the doubleheader sweep by inducing a pop up and a comebacker to end it.

CSU will look to salvage the final game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
