CSU is coming off an 86-68 win over Campbell University last
Saturday. The Bucs' impressive performance was a quick turnaround
from their largest defeat only three days prior (73-53 at Coastal
Carolina). After being held to only 53 total points against
Coastal, the Bucs dropped 49 points in the first half against
Campbell and went into the locker room with a 14-point advantage.
CSU shot 55-percent from the field and drained 11-of-25
three-pointers. Nimley led all scorers with 20 points while adding
in six rebounds and four assists. It was the eleventh time this
season that Nimley finished with 20 or more points. Arlon Harper
(17), Mathian Muo (16) and Paul Gombwer (10) also finished in
double-figures.
Senior, Jeremy Sexton finished with only six points but three of
those points came with a historic three-pointer. Sexton hit his
200th-career triple on Saturday. The 200 threes puts Sexton in
fourth place on the all-time list at CSU and makes him the 31st
player in Big South history to hit at least 200 threes in his
career.
In Winthrop's last outing, the Eagles suffered a disappointing
62-56 loss to Longwood University in Winthrop Coliseum. Longwood
was 0-10 in conference play before defeating Winthrop on Saturday.
The Eagles were cold from the perimeter (6-24) and could not slow
down the Lancers offense that shot 61-percent from the field in the
second half. Graduate-student, Gideon Gamble led the way for the
Eagles with 18 points (7-12 FG) while junior Joab Jerome also
finished in double-figures with 14.
Wednesday will be a rematch from CSU and Winthrop's meeting on
January 9th in the Buc Dome. Charleston Southern finished with five
different players in double-figures en route to a 75-63 win over
Winthrop. The win was CSU's third-consecutive victory in the middle
of an eight-game win streak.
Head coach of the Bucs, Barclay Radebaugh recalled the first time
this seaon, CSU matched up with Winthrop, "It was hard to score
against Winthrop in our first meeting. They are a very physical
team and an excellent defensive team. They're long and strong which
allows them to defend exceptionally well, especially in the half
court."
The last meeting was highly-contested for the majority of the game
until a 17-7 run by the Bucs midway into the second half built a
60-49 lead. During the run, CSU hit five-straight threes by four
different players. The Bucs showcased a balanced scoring attack
(five players in double-figures) dishing out 18 assists and holding
their turnover total to a season-low of four. Muo finished with a
game-high 19 points while Nimley captained the offense with six
points but ten assists and only two turnovers.
Charleston Southern remains the most potent scoring offense during
Big South games. The Bucs lead the league with 74.7 points per
conference game while leading the country in three-pointers made
per game (9.52). CSU shoots an impressive 36.7-percent from
downtown (first in the Big South). Individually, the Bucs are led
by Nimley with 15.8 points (fifth in Big South) and 5.3 assists per
game (second in the league) along with Harper's 15.0 points per
game (ninth in Big South).
"We have to be able to guard their half-court sets. They get their
key guys great shots. We'll have to match their intensity and
certainly bring our 'A' game if we want to have a chance at winning
in Rock Hill," added Radebaugh.
In sharp contrast to Charleston Southern, Winthrop has a methodical
offense that works to slow the tempo down. The Eagles are second in
the league in scoring defense (61.1 ppg) and have held
eight-straight opponents to under 70 points. Offensively, however,
the Eagles are last in the Big South in scoring (60.1 ppg).
Sophomore guard, Derrick Henry, leads the offense with 11.6 points
per game while Gamble is the only other player averaging more than
ten points per game (10.1). Gamble is the only Eagle who is
averaging in double-figures during conference play (10.5).
Wednesday will be the first of two road games for the Bucs this
week. After the matchup with the Eagles, Charleston Southern will
head to North Carolina to take on Asheville on Saturday. Asheville,
who is tied with CSU for first in the South Division, plays at home
against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.
