CHARLESTON, S.C. - Marketa Placha helped the Buccaneers clinch
the doubles point and followed it up by clinching the overall match
point on court no. 1 as Charleston Southern defeated the University
of Maryland Baltimore County on Wednesday afternoon, 6-1.
Placha teamed up with Yvonne Hubler on court no. 2 in doubles
play as the CSU duo won 8-6 to give the Bucs the 2-1 win in doubles
play, and the junior from the Czech Republic followed with a
straight sets singles win on court no. 1, winning 6-2, 6-3 over
Isabel Aldunate to put the Bucs ahead 4-1, clinching CSU's sixth
consecutive win.
The Buccaneers improve to 7-4 overall with the victory, running
their winning streak to six in a row with conference matches
against Presbyterian and UNC Asheville looming ahead this
weekend.
In doubles action, Aldunate and Madlena Kuracz led off the play
with a win for the Retrievers, defeating Susita Das and Chanel Bell
on court no. 3.
Charleston Southern rallied back on court no. 1 as Alia Nour and
Angelica Sidorenko evened the match with an 8-4 win over Josefin
Strange-Jonsson and Julia Sauer. Placha and Hubler closed out
doubles play and clinched the first point of the match for the
Buccaneers, winning 8-6 in a tough match against Heidi Danielsson
and Shannon Cleary.
Moving on to singles action, the Buccaneers quickly put the
overall match win within reach as Hubler and Nour swept through
their opponents in straight sets.
Hubler took the first point on court no. 2, defeating Danielsson
6-0, 6-2, while Nour finished right behind with a 6-1, 6-4 victory
over Strange-Jonsson to put the Bucs ahead 3-0 with four matches to
play.
The Retrievers put one point on the board on court no. 6 as
Cleary bounced back from her doubles defeat in topping Das. Cleary
took the match win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Placha clinched the win for Charleston Southern on court no. 1,
taking down Aldunate in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
The final two matches went three sets apiece with Bell and
Sidorenko proving victorious over the stretch.
Bell and her opponent Kuracz split the first two sets with Bell
taking the first 6-3, while Kuracz followed with a 6-0 win in the
second set, forcing the third set. The match swung back and forth
in the deciding frame before Bell was able to close out the 7-5
win.
On court no. 3, Sauer jumped ahead early for the Retrievers,
taking the first set from Sidorenko, 6-4. The CSU sophomore from
Toronto, Canada rallied back to take the second set by a matching
6-4 score and rode the momentum with a 6-1 win in the third set to
close out the match.
Charleston Southern is back in action at home on Friday as the
Buccaneers host Senior Day against Presbyterian. The Bucs women's
tennis team will recognize senior Susita Das during the
festivities, while Charleston Southern takes on the Blue Hose with
first serve in doubles play coming at 2:30 p.m.
