Bucs' winning streak ends with 4-3 loss to Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern saw their eight match winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers suffered their first loss in the month of March and first loss in Big South Conference play in the 2013 season to the visiting Winthrop Eagles, 4-3.

Winthrop improves to 9-9 overall, 4-0 in Big South action on the year, while Charleston Southern falls to 9-5, 5-1 in Big South action.

In a match featuring two of the top teams in the Big South Conference coming into the season, the afternoon lived up to its billing at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex with the teams swapping blows in doubles play, while three singles matches went into the full third set.

Doubles action saw Winthrop take the opening point of the match as the Eagles won on courts 1 and 3, while Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler improved to 8-1 on the season with a win on court no. 2 for the Bucs.

Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia topped CSU's Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko on court no. 1 in doubles action, winning 8-5, while Caitlin Cridlan and Ekin Gunaysu topped Susita Das and Marketa Placha on court no. 3, 8-2.

Hubler and Walters provided the lone victory in doubles play for the Bucs, topping Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portiolli, 8-5.

Moving on to singles action, Walters and Nour both improved to 6-0 in Big South Conference action with wins on courts 4 and 5, while Placha fought back from a first set loss to winning in three sets on court no. 1

However, Winthrop took wins on courts no. 2, 3 and 6 to complete the 4-3 victory.

Walters topped Cridland on court no. 4, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, while Nour topped Gunaysu on court no. 5, winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Placha gave the Bucs their third win of the afternoon on court no. 1, topping Andressa Garcia after dropping the first set, 6-2. Placha rebounded to take the second set 6-4 and rallied for the win with the 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Portioli defeated Sidorenko on court no. 3, 6-0, 6-3, while Chanel Bell fell on court no. 6 to Tijana Uzelac, 6-2, 6-0.

Alice Garcia took the win for the Eagles on court no. 2, clinching the match with the 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Hubler.

Charleston Southern returns to the road next week as the Bucs travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty University on April 5. The Bucs remain on the road the following day in Radford, Va., taking on the Highlanders on April 6.
