ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Buccaneers Women's Tennis team saw their season come to an end in the 2013 Big South Conference Championship match as CSU fell to top-seed Winthrop University on Saturday morning, 4-0.
Charleston Southern picked up a wins in the quarterfinals against No. 7 Radford and semifinals against No. 3 Presbyterian, but the Buccaneers were unable to overcome host Winthrop in a rematch of CSU's only Big South Conference loss back on March 30th.
However, in the rematch, the Eagles jumped ahead early in taking the doubles point, and Winthrop added the first three victories in singles action to clinch the conference championship.
Winthrop was able to take the opening doubles point after a tough match as Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia defeated Angelica Sidorenko and Alia Nour on court no. 1, 9-8 (7-5) to clinch the point.
Ekin Gunaysu and Caitlin Cridland opened doubles play defeating the Bucs' duo of Marketa Placha and Susita Das on court no. 1, 8-1. Charleston Southern battled back on court no. 2 as Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters topped Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portiolli, 8-4, to even the score before CSU's defeat on court no. 1.
Singles play saw Alkema strike the first blow for Winthrop on court no. 1, defeating Placha 6-3, 6-1. Garcia and Sidorenko finished shortly afterward on court no. 3, with the Eagles prevailing 6-2, 6-3.
Tijana Uzelac clinched the match on court no. 6, defeating Das 6-0, 6-3, to end the tournament.
The loss sees Charleston Southern's season come to an end after a 14-7 record in which the Bucs went 8-1 in Big South Conference play.
