Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern saw their three match winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell to local rival The Citadel at Washington Light Infantry Field, 2-1.
Chelsea Frankeny picked up her third goal of the season in the loss, scoring in the 59th minute off the assist from Toni Lashley to even the match, but a late goal by Mariana Garcia swung the advantage back to the Bulldogs in the 79th minute and the Buccaneers could not answer on the other end in the loss.
Charleston Southern falls to 3-2 overall on the season, while The Citadel improves to 1-2-1 on the year.
Charleston Southern opened the match peppering the net in the first 17 minutes as Ashley Lowdermilk, Toni Lashley and Chelsea Phillips all fired shots toward the net, but The Citadel goalkeeper Naomi Carter proved up to the task all three times in keeping the Buccaneers off the scoreboard.
Ana Mesa opened up the offensive attack at the 17:49 mark, launching a shot that sailed wide of the net, but Charleston Southern continued with the next four shots as the Bucs held control of the first 30 minutes of the contest, holding the 7-1 shot advantage.
However, The Citadel was the first into the back of the net as Leiva scored the opening goal in the contest in the 31st minute as the senior midfielder took advantage of confusion in front of the CSU net inside the goal box, collecting the pass from Jillian Meyer and sliding the ball into the back of the net from seven yards out. The shot, which came at the 30:47 mark in the contest, gave the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
Over the remainder of the opening period, The Citadel held the 5-2 shot advantage with Mariana Garcia twice directing attempts toward the CSU net, but CSU goalkeeper Dana McLaughlin recorded saves on both shot attempts to keep the match at 1-0 heading into the halftime break.
Lea Raedle came out firing for The Citadel in the second half, firing the first three shots of the period in the first five minutes as the Bulldogs recorded the first five shots of the half, but McLaughlin had two saves during the stretch to keep the margin the same.
Frankeny had two one-on-one opportunities in the 59th minute against Carter with her first attempt at the 58:02 mark slapped away on her shot attempt from 20 yards out. The CSU sophomore learned from her first attempt, taking the long pass from Lashley less than a minute later, dribbling past the goalkeeper and firing a shot off her left foot into the back of the net at the 58:58 mark to even the match at 1-1.
The Citadel kept control of the ball in the second half though, outshooting the Buccaneers 14-9 in the second half with Garcia taking advantage in the 79th minute, taking the pass from Andrea Davila and Montana Hinson to put the go-ahead goal into the net. Her shot came from the left side of the box at the 78:26 mark to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1.
In the closing minutes, Charleston Southern had two final shot attempts with Anna Sells attempting a header on the long cross by Gina Thomas at the 86:40 mark, but her attempt sailed wide right, while Frankeny attempted the final attempt at the 89:08 mark with her shot continuing past the goal to the left as the Bucs fell for the second time in the 2013 season.
McLaughlin had a season-high 12 saves in the match as The Citadel out-shot the Bucs 21-18 in the match. CSU held the 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Charleston Southern continues on the road this week as the Buccaneers travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer University on Thursday, September 12th. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Bears is set for 7 p.m.
