BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Erin Bratcher set a Gore Arena record with seven three-pointers as Charleston Southern connected on a season-high 15 shots from behind the arc as the Buccaneers opened up their Big South Conference road trip with an 81-71 victory over host Campbell on Thursday night.
Bratcher connected on six three-pointers in the first half, and made her first attempt of the second half in breaking the previous Gore Arena record of six triples, set last by Kasey Hobbie of Presbyterian on January 5, 2013. The senior guard connected on six three-pointers earlier this season on December 28th, tying the Dedmon Center record at Radford University in the CSU 84-64 victory over the Highlanders.
Charleston Southern set a new season high from behind the arc for the third consecutive game as DJ Fowler and Tatum Jarvis also connected on multiple three-pointers in the contest to join Bratcher's career-high. CSU topped previous efforts of 12 treys against Longwood and 11 against Liberty in connecting on 15 three-pointers, their most treys in a game since CSU connected on 15 back in 2011 against Southern Wesleyan.
Bratcher led all players on the night with a career high 26 points in pacing a CSU effort that saw the Bucs shoot 43.4 percent from the floor and 46.9 percent from behind the arc on the night. Bratcher was 7-for-14 from behind the arc and added three rebounds and two steals in a team-high 38 minutes for her second 20 point effort on the season.
Fowler finished the night with 17 points, adding five assists and four rebounds on the night. The senior guard also helped the Bucs build onto their lead late, going 9-for-12 from the free throw line in the win. Jarvis was also in double-digits with 16 points, connecting on three three-pointers on the night in the win.
Roslyn Presley led the Camels on the night with 26 points and added seven rebounds as Campbell shot 50.9 percent from the floor in the night, but struggled to control the ball in turning it over 22 times in the loss. Kiera Gaines added 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Charleston Southern improves to 5-9, 2-4 overall in the Big South Conference with the victory, while Campbell falls to 8-7, 3-3 in conference play with the loss.
Anicia Dotson opened up the action with a layup and Bratcher followed with her first three-pointer of the night as the Buccaneers began what would be a familiar theme in hitting from deep early and often as Charleston Southern connected on 10 first half triples on the night.
With CSU ahead 11-5 following a Fowler three-pointer, the Camels rallied on an 8-0 run as Presley scored four points during the stretch in taking their first lead of the game. RaeChaun Edwards put Campbell ahead 13-11 with a layup on the fast break with 13:15, but Bratcher answered with a triple to swing the Bucs back in front on the following possession.
The teams would battle through three ties and eight lead changes in the first half, with the final tie coming at the 5:17 mark in the first half as Heather Beadle converted the first of two free throw attempts for the Camels. However, Kirklin Kirkpatrick answered with her first three-pointer of the season at the 4:18 mark to give CSU the lead for the rest of the half, putting the Bucs ahead 28-25.
The Kirkpatrick triple put CSU on an 11-2 run with Bratcher and Jarvis connecting from deep as the Bucs lead reached nine at 36-27. Presley closed out the half for Campbell with a pair of late baskets to put the score at 36-31 in favor of Charleston Southern heading into the break.
Bratcher, Dotson and Jarvis all hit three-pointers to open up the second half as the Buccaneers lead reached double-digits for the first time on the evening as CSU's lead reached 45-33 with 18:24 remaining in the contest. CSU's lead remain in double-digits at 52-40 following a Bratcher layup, but a 12-5 Campbell run over the next six minutes brought the Camels back to within four points with 8:54 on the clock.
However, a step-back jumper by Alyssa Mann ended the Campbell run and the Camels were unable to get any closer as Charleston Southern stretched their lead back out to nine at 68-59 with 4:34 remaining. Fowler connected on four free throws and Monique Maximilien dropped in a put back on a Rochelle Brophy miss during the stretch to give CSU the nine point advantage.
With Campbell mounting a final comeback, Charleston Southern shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line over the final 1:06 in closing out the 81-71 victory. Fowler, Jarvis, Bratcher and Maximilien all went a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe during the stretch, sealing the Bucs second Big South win of the season.
Maximilien led CSU with eight rebounds and added two blocked shots to the night down low, but Campbell held the 35-28 advantage on the boards in the contest.
Charleston Southern continues their road trip on Saturday afternoon, traveling to High Point, N.C. to take on the Panthers in Big South play. Tipoff inside the Millis Center is set for 4:30 p.m.
