Hot shooting No. 24 Colorado State downs Charleston Southern, 75-54

Box Score

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State went on a 21-0 run spanning both halves to open up a 29-point lead en route to a 75-54 win over Charleston Southern at Moby Arena on Monday night. The Rams held the Bucs scoreless for 8:40 of game time during that stretch, led by as many as 30 points and looked the part of the number 24 team in the country.

Colorado State (12-0) continued the best start in school history and secured the longest winning streak in program history as well. Charleston Southern (5-5) hung in early in the first half, but could not overcome the Rams' talented and deep offensive attack in dropping its third straight game.

Colorado State point guard Daniel Bejarano led five players in double figures scoring with 15 points, as the Rams shot 49 percent from the field and knocked down 13-of-29 three-point attempts. Charleston Southern struggled offensively for a third straight contest, shooting just 34 percent and 8-of-27 from three while committing 18 turnovers. Saah Nimley led the Bucs with 18 points and Arlon Harper added 11, but the rest of the team combined to make just eight shots.

Harper brought Charleston Southern within 19-15 with a three at the 9:05 mark of the first half. Despite Colorado State's torrid shooting – the Rams started the game 11-of-18 overall and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc – Charleston Southern was still down only 29-21 following another Harper trey with 4:51 left until halftime. It was all Colorado State from there, as the Rams scored 21 straight and 24 of 26 in total to forge a 53-23 advantage with 15:57 left.

Four different players scored for Colorado State during their 9-0 surge to end the first half, with two John Gillon free throws providing a 38-21 halftime lead. Colorado State started the second half with an onslaught, showing why it is one of nine unbeatens in the Division I ranks. The Rams hit six of their first seven shots of the second stanza, and drilled three threes to quickly put the game out of reach.

Bejarano began the Rams' blitz with a triple, and Tiel Daniels added a two-handed dunk off a steal by J.J. Avila to push the advantage to 24. The cushion swelled to 50-21 moments later, as Stanton Kidd capped the flurry of 21 straight points with a deep three.

Nimley tallied 12 of his 18 points after halftime, as Charleston Southern shot 38 percent from the floor after halftime. The Bucs also got to the free throw line 18 times in the second half, and connected on 14 of those tries. Senior Paul Gombwer delivered a strong effort on the glass for Charleston Southern, grabbing a game-high ten rebounds. Gombwer had three offensive rebounds in the second half, including a tip-in. Colorado State out-rebounded the Bucs, 36-27, in a matchup of two of the top-60 rebounding teams in the country.

CSU takes a week respite from game action before hosting Johnson (Tenn.) on Dec. 29 at 6 p.m. The Bucs tip off Big South Conference play on Jan. 3 at Coastal Carolina.
