CSU sixth among Oak Point teams after opening round of Kiawah Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Charleston Southern is tied for 24th after a team-319 in the opening round of the 36-team 2014 Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, played on Sunday at Oak Point and Cougar Point Courses on Kiawah Island.

CSU is sixth among teams which played their first round on the Oak Point Course, trailing UNC Greensboro by seven strokes for top honors at Oak Point on Sunday.

Troy (+3) leads the tournament by a stroke over Jacksonville State, St. John's, and Kent State. All three teams played Cougar Point on Sunday. Teams will swap courses tomorrow and then be split into flights for Tuesday's final round. Only six teams closed the day in single digits over par and no teams were under par for the day.

Freshman Shelby Thompson's 77 was CSU's top score on Sunday. She opened with a 1-over 37 on the front nine, carding birdies on two of her first four holes. Thompson is 62nd in the field.

Senior Torey Johnson finished with a 79 (+7) after an up-and-down round that included three birdies. She birdied two of the five par-5s at Oak Point.  Senior Vanessa Jay fired an 80 (+8) and was 2-over through 11 holes before a triple bogey on the 13th hole.

Freshman Bella Johnson got off to a fast start with birdies on two of her first four holes, but struggled to a 45 on the back nine to finish with an 83 (+11). Senior Jordan Hollinshead shot a 92 to wrap up CSU's scores from Sunday.

Tee times for Monday's second round begin at 9 a.m.
